This Unique Little City In Northern California Is Perfect For A Day Trip Any Time Of Year

Think you've seen all there is to see in Northern California? Think again! San Juan Bautista is a beautiful and unique little city that's worth visiting. It would be easy to overlook this small city of 2,143 residents, especially since it is located not far from big attractions such as Monterey Bay. But if you love historic architecture and a walkable downtown, you'll enjoy this city. Plus, it is home to a Spanish mission! If you've never been to this unique little city in Northern California, we highly recommend you take a trip here, or at least spend some time exploring this charming area on your way to Monterey Bay.

Located in the lesser-known San Benito County, San Juan Bautista is located between the Central Valley and Monterey Bay.

We love stopping here on our way to the coast! You'll see why!

San Juan Bautista is home to San Juan Bautista State Historic Park which is where visitors will find the mission.

Founded in 1797, the mission is located adjacent to the San Andreas Fault.

The structure was damaged from the 1906 earthquake, as well as previous earthquakes.

Luckily, restoration efforts over the centuries have kept the mission looking like new.

The mission, as well as the on-site museum and gardens, are open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visitors can take self-guided tours or call to reserve a docent-led tour, available on weekdays.

Right across from the mission is the Plaza Hotel.

Built in 1813 as a soldiers’ barracks, today the Plaza stands as an incredible historical site from early California.

After visiting the mission, take some time to explore this tiny city. Although it’s temporarily closed, walk by and admire the Marentis House.

Built in 1873, this Gothic Revival-style home is so darling (it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places).

Third Street is where you’ll find many of the restaurants, bars, and little shops. One of our favorite places, though, is located on 4th Street--Vertigo Coffee Roasters.

In addition to coffee, they make delicious wood-fired pizzas. If you’re visiting on a sunny day, you have to sit outside on their beautiful patio.

You can choose from a variety of other restaurants, including three highly reviewed Mexican restaurants, a barbecue joint, and a beer tasting room that often hosts live music acts.

And don’t forget to pick up some pastries and bread at San Juan Bakery & Grocery before you head out of town.
