It's true Southern California is known for its year-round moderate temperatures and generally sunny weather but, believe it or not, this part of the state that is famous for its summers has a few wintery surprises up its sleeve. Enter Big Bear Lake. Whether you are looking for a cozy and romantic getaway, a fun-filled vacation for the entire family, or a skiing and snowboarding weekend with friends, this snowy town in Southern California pulls out all the stops each year and becomes a magical winter wonderland.
Strolling through Big Bear Lake’s downtown area, known as Pine Knot Village, is like stepping into the pages of a fairytale book. Shops and restaurants look especially inviting with their snow-covered roofs and brightly-lit windows. As the old-fashioned street lamps come on in the evening, this adorable village becomes even more enchanting.
December takes the Village to a whole new level with sparkling lights strung around lamps, poles, trees, and nearly everything that stands still.
Even the lake itself seems more magical somehow with a layer of snow and ice, surrounded by stunning snow-covered pine trees and storybook cabins and cottages. How about a little winter hiking?
What could be more magical than waking up in a quaint forest cabin and watching the sun streaming through tall trees and across the fresh snow?
Big Bear is understandably one of the most popular Southern California destinations in winter. The already scenic mountains and trees are transformed into the ultimate snowy playground.
If you love to ski or snowboard, we can’t imagine a more spectacular destination than Big Bear, with its two fabulous ski resorts, Snow Summit and Big Bear Mountain.
The family that plays together stays together, right? Snow tubing is fun for everyone and is open all winter at Magic Mountain Recreation Area. The covered “Magic Carpet” conveyor lift gets you to the top where you can slide down any of five snow runs, whether you take the hill solo or linked together with the whole family.
The lift and hill are both lit up in the evenings so the fun can continue after the sun goes down.
Also located at Magic Mountain is Southern California’s only authentic bobsled run, the Alpine Slide. Enjoy a thrilling downhill ride surrounded by sparkling white snow and epic views of Big Bear’s scenic lake, trees, and mountains.
Take a moment to revel in the nighttime quiet of a town blanketed in snow and lined with sparkling lights then duck into one of the cozy or lively restaurants to warm up and enjoy a fabulous meal after a full day of activity.
Even the wildlife, including Big Bear’s namesake, enjoys the snow in SoCal during the winter season in this gorgeous mountain town.
