Often we spend weeks, months, or even longer, planning for and organizing a trip. But don't you sometimes just want to grab the keys and get out for a couple of days? I know I do. If a weekend of fun (that doesn't take any real planning ahead) sounds good to you, I have put together a little spontaneous Southern California road trip full of some of my favorite spots and activities north of Los Angeles.

With under three hours of actual drive time, this route gives you plenty of time to relax and enjoy each stop, and even add a few if you’re so inclined. Click on the interactive map above to get directions and customize your trip.

Let's start by fueling up at one of my favorite coffee shops, Lucky Llama. I highly recommend the Mayan Mocha and the Llama Bagel or Llama Toast. The pastries are also wonderful and there are several other breakfast options including a variety of acai bowls, oatmeal, etc.

One of the most beautiful public buildings in the country is in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara County Courthouse is a stunning architectural landmark built in 1929 and surrounded by several sunken gardens. Explore the ornate halls and the historic mural room (don’t forget to look up at the incredible ceiling!), climb the clock tower, and get a look at the inner workings of the clock in the gallery (again, make sure you look up for a fascinating display), and step up onto the tower’s observation deck for the most amazing views of the city and ocean.

Santa Barbara’s Chumash Painted Cave is easily accessible and a must-see piece of Southern California history. You will take a well-maintained winding mountain road off the main road, perhaps pull over at the awesome overlook along the way, then look for a small sign about the landmark. There is a small area where you can park on the left side of the road just below the cave. The cave is small and requires climbing a few stairs to view, but it is truly fascinating.

From here, you’ll take an incredible scenic backroad to the olive capital of Southern California. At Olive Hill Farm, you’ll go on a little one-of-a-kind culinary journey. Discover incredible and surprising flavors and aromas as you sample extra virgin olive oils, balsamic vinegar, and infused olive oils. Enjoy tasting at one of the indoor tasting bars or on the pretty patio. Fall in love with something you taste? A purchase of two bottles means the tasting is free. You’ll pass by lots of wineries in Santa Ynez and Los Olivos, so feel free to stop in for a tasting or two before (or after) enjoying this unique experience that the LA Times named among the “top things to do in Los Olivos.” Keep in mind that wineries in the area can be busy on weekends and some may require a reservation.

The last stop of the day is the fairytale Danish Town of Solvang. Spend the rest of the afternoon and evening exploring the town’s shops, wineries, museums, and landmarks. There are a number of delicious restaurants where you can enjoy dinner. Bit O’Denmark, Mad & Vin, and peasants FEAST are just a few that visitors love. There are also many hotels in and around town so whether you are truly being spontaneous, planning well ahead of time, or even booking a room from the road, you are sure to find a lovely room for the night.In the morning, grab a coffee and breakfast at Paula’s Pancake House or one of the many delicious Solvang bakeries, and maybe explore a few spots you didn’t get to yesterday.

As you leave downtown Solvang, stop in for a fun experience that many Southern Californians have yet to enjoy. At OstrichLand, you can not only see over 100 ostriches and emus wandering through a ranch that resembles their native habitat, you can grab bowls of food from the gift shop and feed them yourself! It’s also a bit mesmerizing to watch these huge birds run through the ranch. Depending on the season, you may even see some babies! The gift shop is also very cool, with one-of-a-kind gifts, clothing, jewelry, and more… and even fresh eggs.

The last destination is the remote little hidden gem known as Jalama Beach County Park where you’ll spend the afternoon enjoying a pristine beach. Get a little sun, enjoy the cool water if the weather is warm, explore the rugged coastline and lovely tidepools, or take a beautiful beach hike. Do not leave without grabbing a famous Jalama Burger for lunch or an early dinner at the Jalama Beach Store Grill! And catch a picture-perfect beach sunset before heading home.
