The Under-The-Radar Scenic Drive In Arkansas That Showcases Hardwood Forests, Lakes, And Breathtaking Sunsets

Whether you’re meandering through the enchanting Ozarks or cruising through the scenic Ouachitas, you’ll witness the best of the Natural State. And while those forests are truly breathtaking, there’s another lesser-known hidden gem in Arkansas that belongs on your list. That destination is the St. Francis National Forest in Marianna. There’s a scenic drive through the region that showcases dense hardwoods, 2 major rivers, and several lakes, along with the most breathtaking Delta sunsets. Gas up the car and let’s cruise through this picturesque forest on this scenic drive in Arkansas.

Linking Marianna to Helena/West Helena is the St. Francis Scenic Byway, a 21-mile route that meanders through the St. Francis National Forest.

Named after the St. Francis River, the 22,000-acre forest is one of the smallest national forests in the country, but it certainly is mighty. In addition to the scenic byway, the forest boasts beautiful hardwood trees, several waterways, recreational areas as well as the Mississippi State Park.

Located on Highway 44, the byway winds along the southern edge of Crowley’s Ridge. Additionally, it's a designated part of the Great River Road, a national scenic byway.

As you cruise, you’ll pass by Bear Creek Lake and Storm Creek Lake which features recreational areas and campgrounds.

So, if you would like to make your trip an overnight adventure, you'll have plenty of options.

There are also historical sites as well as hiking trails where you can stretch your legs.

Moreover, you’ll be delighted to know that the forest is the only spot in the National Forest System where folks can enjoy the mighty Mississippi from its shoreline. It’s one sight you don’t want to miss.

Also, I recommend stopping by the Look Out Point and marvel at the beautiful natural landscapes as far as the eye can see.

One of the best parts about this scenic drive is that you can witness a stunning Delta sunset.

If you plan your trip perfectly, you could extend your drive to cross the Helena Bridge and watch the sun go down over the mighty Mississippi River.
