I must be honest, when it comes to the best small towns in Arkansas, it’s hard to settle on just one. After all, we have plenty to choose from, each with its own unique character and charm. And of course, towns like Eureka Springs are downright magical and always make it to the top of our list. But let’s not overlook Mountain View, a quaint and historic town known for its preservation of Ozark folk music.
The beauty of this historic town in Arkansas is that it has something for everyone to enjoy. Tucked deep inside the heart of the Ozark Mountains is the charming town of Mountain View. With just under 3,000 residents, it's the kind of destination where folks know each other and get together often to keep their heritage and culture alive. Established in 1873, the community is known for its rich history as well as for its preservation of folk music and Ozark culture. Be sure to stop by the iconic Stone County Courthouse and the Stone County Museum (just off Main Street) to learn the history of this beloved mountain town. For a bite to eat, stop by the most adorable cafe on Main Street. PJ’s Rainbow Cafe is the perfect blend of down-home cooking mixed with southern charm. It’s open most days for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and you can expect country favorites like chicken fried steak, chocolate gravy, and biscuits, as well as liver and onions. Locals also love the juicy, mouthwatering burgers, so don’t overlook that. Some say it's one of the best restaurants in Mountain View, and we can't disagree!
Music and art lovers, Mountain View is your slice of heaven. From the Dulcimer Shoppe to the Arkansas Craft School to art galleries to the Mountain View Music Store, you’ll find something to love. There is even a seasonal drive-in movie theater that the entire family will enjoy (it's still one of my favorite things to do after all these years). For the antique collector, you’ll want to stop by the quaint shops on Main Street with their one-of-a-kind collections. And don't leave without visiting the Mellon's Country Store. You can find homemade goods and yummy snacks to take home with you.
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you’re in for a treat! There are so many outdoorsy things to do in Mountain View, Arkansas, like exploring waterfalls, caves, hiking and biking trails, rivers, and so much more. You’ll find Blanchard Springs, Mirror Lake, and Sycamore Creek, as well as the Ozark Folk Center State Park, which has lots of fun activities for the entire family. Due to its proximity to the White River, trout fishing is huge in the area, so if you’re an angler, bring your equipment and spend the day fishing on the river.
