This Blink-And-You’ll-Miss-It Town in Alabama Is So Worth Exploring
If you're not paying attention, you'll regret passing by Falkville, one of the best small towns to visit in Alabama.
While you often hear about uncovering hidden gem towns along backroads, some of the best small towns to visit in Alabama are right under your nose along busier routes. The tiny town of Mooresville, Alabama, is just one that comes to mind. It's so easy to get off of Interstate 565 between Decatur and Huntsville, and yet you'd probably not think to take the exit unless you knew it was there. Another is Waverly, which was more noticeable before a reconfiguration project for US 280 bypassed it in 2000. The tiny town decided to embrace its bypassed status and is slowly becoming one of the best-known "hidden" gems just outside of the fast-growing cities of Auburn and Opelika.
Another little blink-and-you-miss-it town like this is Falkville. Sure, this North Alabama community is much larger than the other two I just mentioned. (It has a whopping 1,000 or so residents versus Mooresville's 49 and Waverly's 148.) It's also located along the fairly busy US Highway 31 between Hartselle and Cullman. Nevertheless, a lot of folks don't think to stop and are missing out on an adventure!
While there is evidence people settled Falkville long before, it had grown enough to justify a general store by 1859, when town namesake and Prussian emigrant Louis M. Falk established one there. Falk later became the town's postmaster. In terms of economic development, Falkville didn't really take off until it became a railroad town with the construction of the L&N line in the early 1870s.
Many folks from all over Morgan County and beyond show up for Falkville's annual Fall Festival in October. The 2025 date for the festival is October 11, so mark your calendars! The town is also a popular spot for its annual Christmas at the Park event at Jack McCaig Park (December 7, 2025). While bigger communities often host great events themed to fit specific identity touchstones, sometimes the tiniest towns do it best just by choosing a shared season and making it all about their community spirit, making people feel welcomed. That seems to be the vibe in Falkville.
Since it all began with the railroad, it's no surprise that heading to the tracks is how you'll find many of the small town's most interesting homegrown businesses. Step inside the colorful world of Apple's Florist & Gifts, a local favorite for beautiful floral arrangements, plants, and special occasion gifts.
Are you an antiquing aficionado like me? Well, get ready to follow the siren call of fantastic vintage finds assembled outside Sweet Pea Antiques, which has been a downtown Falkville staple for several years now. If you happen to be around on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, you can also take a gander for what you may need to take home from Falkville Antiques, too.
While you're in the Falkville area, another don't-miss destination is Dutch Oven Bakery. While it is technically in Falkville, it's nowhere near downtown and yet worth the 10-mile jaunt west. Visit the Dutch Oven Bakery website to see the weekly specials.
Hurricane Creek Park is another side quest worthy of the detour. The 70-acre forested park offers a mile-long hiking trail that leads you through unique rock formations, a waterfall, and even an unexpected rock tunnel. While you could easily spend a couple of hours exploring the area, you can knock out the trail in about an hour.
