Tuscumbia, incorporated in 1820, is the seat of Colbert County, Alabama, and is one of the state's most charming small towns.
There are several places in Tuscumbia that contribute to its charm. One place in particular is Spring Park, which is located downtown and is home to the world's largest man-made natural stone waterfall.
Many people have lived in Tuscumbia. The most famous person from Tuscumbia is Helen Keller. Known as America's "First Lady of Courage," Keller was the first deaf-blind student to graduate from college. She was an honors graduate from Radcliffe College in Massachusetts.
Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama to Captain Arthur H. and Kate Adams Keller. Shortly after turning 19 months, she developed a disease that left her deaf and blind. With the help of teacher Anne Sullivan, she had her famous w-a-t-e-r moment at the well pump. A few months later, she learned the fingertip alphabet and eventually braille. After going on to accomplish many things, Helen Keller died on June 1, 1968 in Easton, Connecticut.
Today, Ivy Green: Birthplace and home of Helen Keller is open to the public for tours. The Helen Keller home was built in 1820 and has four rooms on the main floor and three rooms on the second floor.
Every room has been beautifully decorated with artifacts and period furnishings. In fact, most of the items in the home belonged to the Keller Family.
Visitors of Ivy Green: Birthplace of Helen Keller are also invited to stroll the grounds and enjoy all of the beautiful scenery, and even touch the actual well-pump where the 'miracle' happened.
