Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Tipping Your Uber Driver

For most people, it’s a no-brainer that you should tip your taxi driver after a successful journey. But what about your Uber driver?

Uber has recently added the ability to tack on a tip to your ride fare, a move which goes against their earlier insistence that tipping creates uncertainty about how much drivers can expect to earn and how much passengers should be prepared to pay.

We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life as we all practice social and physical distancing. While we’re continuing to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, we don’t expect or encourage you to go check them out immediately. We believe that supporting local attractions is important now more than ever and we hope our articles inspire your future adventures! And on that note, please nominate your favorite local business that could use some love right now:

If you’re wondering whether or not drivers actually depend on those tips, the answer is actually pretty unclear. A survey of more than 2,600 Uber drivers found that the average hourly income for an UberX driver is about $13.70 without tips. Half of all drivers said they averaged about $5 per tip, and a third said they never earned any tips.

This data suggests that tipping your Uber driver would certainly be appreciated, but that it’s still not as common of a practice as tipping cab drivers. As drivers are typically using their own vehicle and might provide extras like water or snacks, tipping a driver makes sense for the conscientious passenger.
