America’s First Underwater Museum Is Opening This Summer And It Looks As Amazing As It Sounds
All around the world you can find amazing things hiding beneath the surface of our oceans, but not every ocean floor is filled with unique works of art. From Italy to Mexico, underwater museums and art have become an increasingly popular way to help improve our reef systems and give underwater explorers something jaw-dropping to gaze at. But now, after announcing plans for its creation last year, America’s very first Underwater Museum of Art is coming to Florida later this month.

Located less than a mile off the shoreline of Grayton Beach in Walton County Florida, America’s very first Underwater Museum of Art will be open to the public at the end of June. Right off the Sunshine State’s panhandle, the museum will be the first of its kind in our country and has scuba divers and underwater explorers more excited than ever.

The Underwater Museum of Art, also referred to as UMA, will be made up of seven works of art that will be hiding roughly 60 feet below the water’s surface. The museum will have an Anamorphous Octopus, Propeller In Motion, Grayt Pineapple, Concrete Rope Spheres, SWARA Skull, and other sculptures that you won’t believe are now hiding on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico.

Opening at the end of June, the Underwater Museum of Art will be a public space that’s free and open to all visitors. The museum has been able to come together with the help of organizations like the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County, the South Walton Artificial Reef Association, the Walton County Tourist Development Council, and the National Endowment For The Arts.
All seven works of art have been made out of thousands of pounds of concrete, with the assurance that no plastic or toxic materials went into the making of these sculptures. The art itself has been designed to help with things like coral growth and to help with sea life, including embryonic oysters and schools of fish.
