Traveling when pregnant can be just as fun and safe as usual, provided you do it right. Here are a few easy ways to make sure that your burgeoning belly doesn’t interfere with your vacation, and vice versa.
1. Plan travel for your second trimester.
According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, medical emergencies are most likely to happen during a woman’s first and third trimesters. This means that the perfect time to plan your vacation is during your second trimester.
2. Make sure you know your airline’s rules.
Most airlines have restrictions on how far along pregnant travelers can be and require documentation from healthcare providers. Call your airline before booking to make sure you’ll be able to make the outgoing and return journeys without any problems.
3. Stay hydrated.
Dehydration is a common problem in hot climates and dry airplanes. Be sure to travel with a water bottle at your side and take constant sips. And make a point to visit every bathroom that presents itself, even if you don’t think you need to go. You never know when the next opportunity will pop up.
4. Be sure to bring compression socks.
Though they’re not exactly the trendiest travel apparel, compression socks or support hose can help keep issues like leg swelling and headaches at bay during flights. They’re also a good way to combat the possibility of deep vein thrombosis, a potentially fatal emergency that is linked to long flights.
5. Take plenty of breaks.
When you’re pregnant, your body is already working overtime. Trying to overextend yourself on a trip can lead to exhaustion and even trigger health problems. Make sure to plan time for plenty of breaks, naps, and relaxation along with activities like exploring museums and driving to far-flung locales.
