We Texans value authenticity and will always pick homemade over store-bought if given a choice — perhaps that's how Naeglin's Bakery has stayed in business for nearly 150 years. Since 1868, this New Braunfels institution has attracted dessert lovers from all over the state who are just itching to try a piece of authentic German apple strudel. And as the oldest bakery in Texas, it's full of fascinating history. Take a look:
Established in 1868, Naeglin's is the oldest bakery in Texas. It was founded by Edouard Naegelin Sr., who arrived in New Braunfels with less than a dollar and a sack of flour to his name.
While the bakery has changed quite a bit over the past 150 years, its core values remain the same. Cherished family recipes use real, simple ingredients to create timeless treats like the ever-popular apple strudel.
While apple is the most popular, time-honored variety, the strudel also comes in peach and cherry flavors. It's buttery, flaky and practically melts in your mouth.
You can really tell the bakers put love and passion into every batch.
Other bakery items include fresh bread, cookies, donuts, kolaches, coffee cake, and several other delicious goodies. You'll even see whole pies in the dessert case all ready to go! Naeglin's also takes custom cake orders.
If you just can't wait to dig in, there's plenty of seating available outside. Nothing like a little sunshine, good company, and mouthwatering treats that make your taste buds sing with delight.
Stock up on a few loaves of traditional sourdough or some homemade flour tortillas to have at home. French toast for Sunday brunch? How about a weeknight taco salad? Even the most ordinary meals taste better with a touch of authenticity.
