Tucked away in the heart of the Volunteer State you’ll find the town of Sparta, a place that many drive straight through on their way to the waterfalls located in the greater area. Sure, Sparta can be found in a picturesque Tennessee enclave, but the town itself is also great for an afternoon spent sipping a cold one. The town of Sparta was founded in Tennessee in 1806, and it is located in a region of the state known as the "Land of Falling Water." Sparta was named after the capital of Laconia, Greece because both were historically constructed on the banks of small rivers. Settlements in the area took some time to catch on, but European pioneers eventually recognized the natural beauty of the area and began to build permanent structures in the 1800s.
Fall Creek Falls is perhaps the most notable waterfall feature near Sparta, and it’s located in the aptly named Fall Creek Falls State Park. You can access the falls, the tallest east of the Mississippi River, by way of a 2.5-mile hike along the Gorge Overlook Trail.
The Burgess Falls Cascade is also located near Sparta, in Burgess Falls State Park, and it can be found in a limestone gorge that offers natural views. There are multiple waterfalls in the park, so make sure you choose a hike that boasts a water feature and a length you’re willing to trek. The day-use park is great for bird watchers and trail runners as well.
Twin Falls in Rock Island State Park is perhaps one of the best known in the area, and though it isn’t exactly located in Sparta it can be found in nearby Rock Island. The park is located on the headwaters of Center Hill Lake, and you can access Twin Falls along the 1.6 mile Downstream Trail.
Once you’re done with your outdoor adventures, we’d highly recommend a stop at Calfkiller Brewing Company. The locally owned Sparta spot offers tours of the brewery as well as a beer garden for gathering. What began as a simple home brewery has become a true local watering hole, and the brewing system utilized on-site was crafted and honed by the Calfkiller team. Another option is Happy Trails Brewing Co, a small taproom and brewery located in downtown Sparta. The brewery is family-friendly and offers an incredible beer menu.
