When you think of Amish Country, you likely think of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, or maybe even the back roads of Northeast Ohio. But did you know that one of the largest Amish communities in the South is located right here in Tennessee? It's true! It's a little off the beaten path, but it's so worth a visit. There's even a welcome center at this particular community that offers things like community maps, local Amish goods, and best of all, horse-drawn buggy tours of the community. You'll see the beauty of both the Tennessee countryside and the Amish lifestyle, so what's not to love? Hop on the buggy and let's go!
The town of Ethridge, Tennessee is tiny by all standards, but it's one of the must culturally rich towns in the state.
Ethridge is located just about an hour and fifteen minutes south of Nashville, and about 40 minutes north of the Alabama border. That's car driving distance, mind you. Many of the residents of Ethridge take a different mode of transportation, though....
That's right - Ethridge is home to one of the largest Amish communities in the South, and it's right here in Tennessee!
The town is known for its antiques and delicious home-cooked meals at the Amish Cafe (try the fried bologna), but the tours of the area are by far the standouts of the services offered.
Horse-drawn buggies will guide visitors through the heart of the Amish community, educating the riders about the Amish community and providing details on where local goods and services can be purchased.
There are a few different folks in the town that offer horse-drawn carriage tours, but we recommend the ones from the Amish Welcome Center. They offer local maps and also sell many Amish goods right in their own storefront.
If horses aren't your thing, you can still visit the community, learn about Amish life, and shop their goods ranging from furniture to produce to baked goods.
Take the trip down to Amish Country and visit the Welcome Center in Ethridge, located at 3943 US-43. They're open 9 to 5 every day but Sunday.
Make sure to continue the fun with a visit to this nature park also located right outside of the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. What a fun place to take the whole family!
