Experience Little-Known Tennessee History When You Visit The President James K. Polk Home And Museum
Any history buff will be quick to tell you that Tennessee is an absolute gold mine for any American history lovers. From the early pioneers through pivotal events like the Civil War, Women’s Suffrage, and the Civil Rights Movement, there aren’t many iconic American History periods that don’t find Tennessee near the center of the story. But if you’re looking for lesser-known history, then look no farther than the President James K. Polk Home and Museum.
Just an hour south of Nashville in the town of Columbia, you'll find the little-known President James K. Polk Home and Museum, the only remaining residence of our country's 11th president.
The site is home to a memorial to the former president, as he was buried on the grounds from 1850 until his remains along with his wife's were moved to their current location at the Tennessee State Capitol in 1893.
The house is still historically preserved, and thanks to the work of his wife Sarah, many of his belongings and historical artifacts from his life were preserved as well and are displayed in the museum.
The James K. Polk Home and Museum is a great place for families. Non only is it a great way to learn about American history, but they also have tons of activities and events geared towards educating kids.
The house itself hasn't changed much over the years, thanks in large part due to the tireless work of the James K. Polk Memorial Association, started in 1924 by his descendants.
The museum hosts walk-in tours daily, but groups of 10 or more are encouraged to call ahead to schedule a time. Tickets range from $12 for adults to free admission for children 6 and under. They also have family prices for large families so it doesn't get too expensive.
The President James K. Polk Home And Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. They have some extended hours from April through October as well. We hope to see you there!
