This Is The Most Unique Hotel In Wyoming And You’ll Definitely Want To Visit
When it comes to hotels, accommodations can be found almost everywhere. If you're looking for a unique experience, however, you'll want to visit this historic Wyoming inn.
The Occidental Hotel has been practicing the art of hospitality for almost 140 years, so they're pretty good at it. When you check in, fine dining, a famous saloon, and comfortable, inviting rooms are all part of the package. Plus, you'll join the long list of prominent guests that include presidents, authors, and infamous outlaws.
The Occidental Hotel, 10 North Main Street, Buffalo, Wyoming, 82834
Located right on Main Street, it's easy to find the historic inn.
The minute you walk in, it's obvious that this is no ordinary hotel.
After all, through the years, guests have included Teddy Roosevelt, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Ernest Hemmingway, Calamity Jane, and Buffalo Bill Cody, to name a few.
Much of the original details have been left in place and the decor is always period-appropriate, with the addition of a few modern conveniences. Plus, every room from the lobby to the guest rooms and the restaurant are all decorated with antiques.
For guests who prefer more privacy or want to stay longer, the Stewart Clear Creek Cabin is available. It's not built on to the hotel, but is on the banks of Clear Creek, only a few minutes from downtown Buffalo.
Named for the Owen Wister novel "The Virginian," the Occidental's dining room offers tender buffalo and beef steaks including prime rib and filet mignon, along with seafood and other delicacies that are appropriately described as "Fine Western Dining."
Much of the hotel has been refurbished but, like the Occidental Saloon, the goal was to retain authenticity.
If you're in town over a long weekend, be sure to head to the saloon for the weekly Thursday night bluegrass jam session.
Though the entire hotel is practically a museum, a portion of the Occidental has been turned into an actual museum.
It's where you can see the antiques, historical clothing, photos, and other artifacts that tell the story of the Johnson County Cattle War, cowboys and Indians, outlaws, the Bozeman Trail, and loads of other events from the late 1800s to early 1900s.
The Occidental is certainly distinctive, but it's in good company. What other unique Wyoming hotels have you stayed at?
