It's rare to live in a state where you'd also choose to vacation, but this is one of the many perks of living in Virginia. Are you a city-dweller dreaming of the countryside? Or perhaps you're surrounded by mountains and dreaming of the surf? No matter the circumstance, even the pickiest traveler will find the perfect getaway in Virginia. When I dream of an escape, I often envision time on the water. And while Virginia Beach is an excellent candidate for a water-filled getaway, it's actually the Northern Neck that has inspired my bucket list this season; specifically, the Tides Inn in Irvington. Here's why this dreamy boutique resort represents everything we love about Virginia's River Realm.
Perched on a private peninsula along the banks of a Chesapeake Bay tributary, the Tides Inn offers its guests an immersive experience of nature, history, and culture. It boasts a beautiful shoreline teeming with life and unmatched hospitality.
Guests can choose from 70 rooms, many of which feature a remarkable water view. (Prefer to arrive by boat? There's a twenty-seven–slip overnight marina!) The interior design is stunning; elegantly designed and cozy. Each room and suite is meticulously maintained and accentuates the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. By all accounts, this is a hotel where the staff goes above and beyond to ensure your stay is a memorable one.
While spring and summer may feel like obvious times to flock to the water, there's something magical about an autumn adventure at the Tides Inn. Take a stroll along the Shoreline Trail or the resort's new Woodland Trail for beautiful views of the surrounding foliage. You can also rent a complimentary bike and head into Irvington, which is just a quick trip away for a healthy dose of small-town charm.
Just as delightful as the views of fall are the tastes of fall, captured beautifully on the Salt & Meadow menu. You'll find a host of seasonal ingredients incorporated into every dish, whether you're enjoying a fresh catch or something from a local farm.
Plus, there are so many signature seasonal experiences to enjoy at the Tides Inn, many of which celebrate the rich ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay. Those curious to learn more about oysters can take a guided tour on a waterman's boat with the resident ecologist. Not only will you grow a deeper understanding of how oysters are a keystone species but you'll also learn how to "grade" the perfect oyster. To top it all off, you and your crew can enjoy some freshly grilled oysters along with a local beverage of choice.
You might also try your hand at watercolor painting, guided by the resident artist. Cruising along Carters Creek with a mimosa in hand, you'll feel nothing short of inspired! There are plenty of other non-scheduled activities to enjoy, too, ranging from birdwatching to stand-up paddleboarding or perhaps even reading by the fireside.
So whether you're planning a trip with your family, a girls' weekend, or perhaps even a solo excursion, you won't help but leave feeling connected to this special region of our state. I, for one, am hoping to make a trip before the season is over!
