The One Texas Airbnb You Need to Book for Unreal Dark Sky Views
Escape to a Texas Airbnb stargazing retreat with clear night skies, Milky Way views, and a cozy desert cabin near Big Bend for an unforgettable getaway.
A Texas Airbnb stargazing isn't hard to find, but have you ever seen one with its own observatory? The Big Bend Observatory in Terlingua sits underneath some of the darkest skies in the world, just an hour away from Big Bend National Park. With a private observatory and elevated viewing platform, this desert oasis is every amateur astronomer's dream.
When you book the Big Bend Observatory, you get a front row seat to the dazzling display that is the West Texas night sky. It feels like you're in a whole new world — one filled with magic and mystery — as you explore the wonders of the universe from a perspective few will ever get to see.
Big Bend National Park is one of the least-visited national parks in the United States, primarily due to its remote location. It's rugged, difficult to access, and visitor amenities are slim. Terlingua, the nearest town to the park, is just as secluded, with towering mountains all around that isolate it from the rest of the world. Here in this world-famous ghost town, you'll find the Big Bend Observatory, the only vacation rental in the Terlingua area with its own observatory.
The newly-built cabin sleeps up to four guests. It features an open floor plan, complete with a double bunk bed, a full bathroom, a kitchen, and a small living area. While it's no five-star hotel, there are enough modern amenities to keep you comfortable, including air conditioning, heating, a computer, and basic kitchen essentials.
You can see the observatory in the first photo, which is to the far right of the cabin. The roof and one of the walls are retractable for unobstructed views of the night sky. Inside is a telescope that streams images directly to your smartphone or tablet, allowing you to cherish them forever. The viewing platform, known as a Sky Deck, is situated between the cabin and the observatory. It's 11 feet above ground level and features special binoculars that showcase the cosmos in all its glory. On clear nights, you can see all your favorite constellations, and even the Milky Way.
Although equipment is provided, guests are encouraged to bring their own to take full advantage of the unparalleled viewing experience. A professional tripod is also available for all the astrophotographers out there. And don't worry if you're "just" a hobbyist; both the telescope and binoculars are user-friendly with simple instructions. From seasoned pros to first-timers, everyone is awestruck by the vastness of the West Texas night sky. I know this is an article about dark skies, but the views are equally amazing by day. The binoculars on the Sky Deck are great for admiring the mountain scenery and viewing local wildlife.
