Looking for Unique Stays? These 5 Tennessee Airbnbs Are Exceptional

Your LOTR-inspired dream getaway awaits!

Have you ever wanted to know what it was like to live in the Shire? We have found five hobbit houses in Tennessee that encapsulate the magic of the "Lord of the Rings" and these utopian halflings. This is my all-time favorite movie series, and if you are anything like me, you will want to dive headfirst into these whimsical properties in Tennessee.

1. Forest Gully Farms, Santa Fe

Part of getting the full shire experience of a hobbit house goes beyond having an earthen home. The community and rolling green hills of Hobbiton are unquestionably part of the fun. The owners of Forest Gully Farms clearly understand this and thus have created a whole experience beyond your front door. When you book a stay here, you will have access to 15 acres of enclosed farmland where all three of the huts are yours to use and explore. So enjoy the property as if you stepped into a scene from this Tolkien classic, with chickens roaming around and seasonal fruits and veggies you can pick from.

You can expect the experience to be similar to glamping. That being said, there is still a kitchen, 1.5 bathrooms, and a laundry room. There is no running water inside, but you will find a wash station on the property. You are free to explore the grounds as much as you like. Hobbits aren't much for adventures, though, so stay local on the property and take a stroll through the woods. Wash your bare feet in the nearby stream with a small waterfall or warm up on a cold night around the fire.

2. The Sassafras Dome Earth Home, Johnson City

The story of this property is a fascinating tale of redemption. The land was left trashed and full of overgrowth, but the owners saw its potential. "Beauty from ashes" is such a wonderful way of explaining this transformation because now we are treated to this breathtaking hobbit house. This area is meant to be a retreat where you unplug and connect with your loved ones again — after all, hobbits didn't have cell phones!

The interior is immaculate with large windows that allow plenty of natural light to filter in. Filled with modern touches, it will be more in line with our contemporary world than that of the Shire, but if they were around today, I’m sure a few hobbit holes would look like this. The Sassafras is perched on a rock ledge overlooking the stunningly beautiful quarry. Listen to the steady flow of the waterfall, have a fire late into the night, and enjoy a soak in the private stone spa located outside.

3. The Mountain Shire, Sevierville

The Mountain Shire welcomes you to step into the fairytale world, vis-à-vis these one-of-a-kind tiny homes. Each has a name that fits the fantasy theme quite nicely, like this one, "The House of Dragons." Each dwelling is decorated differently to fit the theme with dragon statues, medieval maps, and exposed natural elements.

You will be sharing the community with others who want to live like hobbits for their trip. On the property, you can expect to see fire pits (that have the "One Ring" writing on the fire ring!), families sharing a meal (like lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, or supper), and enjoying the beautiful grounds. There are many enchanting touches throughout the grounds to search for, too. If you can pull yourself away from this glorious property, you are in the Smoky Mountain region, which has a multitude of activities to enjoy. The address will say "Sevierville," but locals know the area as Wears Valley, and in my personal opinion, Wears Valley is the unsung hero of the Smokies.

4. Wee Nook, McEwen

This Hobbit-inspired hole, lovingly known as the Wee Nook, is the perfect tiny home. Just look at the 999 glowing reviews! This 360-square-foot stay is the epitome of comfort. Inside, you'll find a queen bed, couch, full kitchen, and bathroom. But once you step outdoors, you'll be rubbing shoulders with hundreds of lush trees. And let's not forget about the edible plants that live on the roof.

The remote environment here encourages you to stay off the grid. There is no internet or TV on this property, so be sure to bring games, books, or other activities to keep you busy. When you're not indoors, you may also like sitting by the fireplace or walking around the nearby trails. Be sure to say hi to the owners' dog, too!

5. Shiner's Shire of The Forgotten Forest, Kodak

If you need just a slightly bigger space to accommodate your party, then this property is the one for you. The Shiner's Shire is a three-bed, three-bath home with room for seven guests. And while the name of the property is aptly named after the beloved book and movie series, the interior of the home is even more whimsical.

Inside, you'll notice earthy decor, a rustic kitchen, comfy couches and chairs, flickering lighting, a walk-in shower, and cozy beds. But when you step outdoors, you'll be welcomed by a hot tub, a tree swing, a fire pit, and plenty of seating. This space is truly an enchanting experience. Only your imagination knows what you'll do here!

I love it when art inspires life and takes on another form. The story told by J.R.R. Tolkien has captured the imagination of generations, and from that glorious tale, we now have many multimedia experiences. From works of art painted on canvas to board games, the story is carried on in so many ways. When I first saw these Hobbit-inspired homes being built, I was so excited to share the news. They are not earthen homes, but still embody every bit of the fantasy world the halflings come from. Adding their own touches, you will find several of these hobbit-inspired tiny homes throughout Tennessee.
