This Secluded Gem in South Dakota Is the Next Big Thing in Slow Travel

Mount Rushmore Resort and Lodge at Palmer Gulch in Hill City, South Dakota is perfect for slow travel.

I grew up spending every summer at Mount Rushmore Resort and Lodge at Palmer Gulch in Hill City, South Dakota. Just minutes from Mount Rushmore, this secluded gem is the perfect base for a vacation exploring the Black Hills. While a lot has changed since the ‘90s, the resort has expanded to offer a little something for every type of traveler.

First, let’s talk about slow travel. Slow travel is a trend that has taken the industry by storm. It essentially encourages travelers to stay in one place for an extended period of time, rather than changing locations every few days. It allows time to immerse yourself and truly get to know a destination, rather than just a quick taste.

What makes the Mount Rushmore Resort and Lodge at Palmer Gulch so great for slow travel is the little community it has built within itself. While there are traditional hotel rooms, camp sites, and camping cabins, there are a variety of deluxe cabin accommodations that are ideal for an extended stay. These cabins are set back from the resort’s amenities to allow for a more private atmosphere. Additionally, they come with kitchens.

The diversity of available cabins means that the resort can cater to a variety of needs. There are cozy options perfect for retirees or bigger options for young families. A perk to staying at the resort is the option to take advantage of the resort's amenities. You'll find a swimming pool, multiple restaurants, a small grocery store, laundry facilities, and even horseback riding. The resort also produces regular events like a summer rodeo and weekly live music. A personal favorite is the daily all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast tent.

The 100-acre property is large enough that you can get away from all the happenings if you’d like a more private experience. You’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. When I worked at the resort for a summer, I saw multiple mountain lions, deer, and even mountain goats on the property.

One of the best parts about choosing an extended stay at Mount Rushmore Resort and Lodge at Palmer Gulch is the chance to build a community. It’s common for guests, or even local seasonal workers, to stay at the resort for the entire summer. With so much going on, it’s easy to connect and make new pals on your South Dakota getaway.

Finally, the resort is centrally located within the Black Hills. Everything from Custer State Park to Rapid City is an easy drive away. One of the many trails to Black Elk Peak is even across the street. With so much going on and the spaciousness of the cabins, you won’t feel alone if you don't want to be during your multi-week or months-long stay.

While traditional hotels and short-term rentals have their place, sometimes a cabin in the woods is just what you need. Mount Rushmore Resort and Lodge at Palmer Gulch is the perfect way to truly get lost in the Black Hills while still enjoying the comforts of a nearby community.
