You Can Sleep and Pet Horses at This Airbnb in South Dakota

Step back in time to the Old West while interacting with horses and goats at this Airbnb in Piedmont, South Dakota.

There’s always been a soft spot for the Old West in my heart, and ever since finishing the hit TV show Yellowstone, I’ve had a hankering to get out on a ranch. Located on a working farm in Piedmont, South Dakota, this one-room cabin lets guests interact with the host’s horses and goats. Complete with bunk beds and the ranch outside your window, you’ll feel like Kevin Costner is going to walk in and tell you to saddle up at any moment.

First, the location of the Airbnb is an absolute highlight. It’s about 15 minutes north of Rapid City, South Dakota, and only 75 minutes or so from the iconic Custer State Park. If you’re in the Black Hills for a vacation, it’s a centrally located place to hit the hay every night.

The room itself sleeps four. Guests have a full-sized bed and then twin bunk beds. Please note that there are two shared bathrooms. This means you might be sharing the bathroom with other guests and the hosts. While there isn’t a kitchen, guests have access to a microwave, a small fridge, and a coffee maker. The essentials! You can even bring your dog as long as they’re kept on a leash when exploring the property. Guests may also use the outdoor grill and fire pit. My favorite part of the property is the swing that overlooks the horse’s pasture.

If you’ve ever been on a military installation, you may notice that the building itself feels a bit like barracks. That’s because it is! Initially, the structure was one of 82 hutments that could house up to 25 troops. Originally purchased in the 1970s, the building has since been modernized to accommodate for chilly South Dakota winters and simply improve overall comfort for guests like you. You’ll still have access to Wifi, hot water, heating, and air conditioning. Don’t worry, you’re not getting too rugged out on the farm.

As mentioned earlier, you’re going to see horses and goats scattered throughout the property. In fact, the farm is frequently used for equine-assisted therapy sessions. You’ll get to visit with the goats, and maybe even pet a horse or two who decide to approach the fence. You’ll notice just outside the goats' pasture, there is a little vending machine where you can grab some food to feed the hungry (and soon-to-be very friendly) goats.

While this Airbnb is a great stay any time of year, it’s particularly popular during the Fourth of July. The town of Piedmont is known for its extravagant July Fourth celebrations, and you’ll have a front-row seat to fireworks on the farm.

Surrounded by the incredible Black Hills of South Dakota, this one-bedroom cabin is well worth a stop. Whether you're in town for the annual Sturgis festival or finally making that great trip out west you've been dreaming about, you're in for a treat. Surrounded by horses, goats, and one-of-a-kind nature, the farm's atmosphere is just something you can't find anywhere else. Feeling inspired?
