Are you looking for a little excitement on your vacations? You know, the kind that is more than a fancy place to dine or beautiful sights to see? Are you just a tad interested in the what goes bump in the night? Than these South Carolina hotels and bed and breakfasts may just be for you! Everyone knows that South Carolina is rich in history. The history of our state starts when Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon settled here with 600 people in 1526 so, there is really no surprise that there are restless spirits roaming about here and there. If you would would be interested in a frightening experience, here is a list of hotels and bed and breakfasts that may fit your bill and make your stay unforgettable.
1. Battery Carriage House Inn, Charleston, SC
Guys and Gals this place is jumping! There are three places in this inn that have get a lot of ghostly attention. In Room 8, you can usually see and/or hear the apparition of a male torso. He's dressed in an overcoat and seems to love to aggravate the men for chuckles, but he's totally harmless. In Room 10, you will get to see the "Gentleman Ghost". He is a slender man who is dressed nicely. He is usually gray and wispy in appearance. He is very nice and apparently has a gentle disposition. He's just interested in day to day life and likes to hang around. In the raised basement rooms, which used to be the servant quarters, you can see visions of light or orbs in different shapes and sizes that seem to congregate together. They tend to play with your electronics (obviously they can't help themselves), and play with the water facets. If you want lots of activity, this is the place to go. Incidents of appearances have been reported time and time again!
2. Meeting Street Inn, Charleston, SC
Besides being a beautiful place to stay, you may also run into a few spirits who like to roam about. There are a few stories about them. It is reported that in Room 303, you may be locked out and even if the master key is used to open the door you still will not get in. However, if you stand back and run at the door, it will open wide for your entrance as if it was never closed to begin with. In Room 107, a couple got a scare as they looked at the end of their bed one morning and saw an unknown woman. She looked pretty solid from the waist up, but from the waist down she was going, going, going, gone. However, she is quite content to just appear and nothing else. There are two other entities roaming about the inn restlessly and most think that these are members of the original family who built the home. Overall, they are pretty nice and it seems you might not have to book a specific room to get an experience of a different kind!
3. Embassy Suites, Greenville, SC
It doesn't have to be an old building to be a haunted building. Who knows what makes a building attractive to spirits? There have been no sightings of apparitions here, but it is said that the lights will turn on and off at will, and doors fling open and close on their own. It is also said that during construction of the place when there was no electricity, there were still lights going on and off! Besides this? There are patches on the golf course where grass refuses to grow and some golfers have said they have heard the sounds of wailing.
4. The Historic Belmont Inn, Abbeville, SC
Established in 1902, there's no wonder there may be spirits lurking about. In fact, there are a couple here that seem to make regular visits. One of them is named Abraham. He usually occupies the ground floor and is seen out the corner of your eye. The other is thought to be a Scotsman who occupies the main stairs. He likes to knock on doors at odd hours of the night and when you check to see who is there...there is no one there. There have also been reports of moved or missing objects as well as broken glass in the oddest of places. It may be something you would like to check out.
5. Walnut Lane Inn, Lyman, SC
Life is never dull when you have "guests" about and that's exactly what Walnut Lane Inn has. The innkeeper says that there are two and possibly three ghosts there. One is of a man with no discernable shape really, but seems to love being in the kitchen. The second one is of a woman wearing dark skirts who seems to like the stairs and could also be the reason why they have to continuously straighten the pictures and lampshades. The third is a voice that is heard at times outside of the house. The dogs seem to bark as if there is someone there, but there is never anything to be seen.
6. The Inn at Merridun, Union, SC
Looking for a popping place? This one just may be the one! The owners claim 10 or more spirits/energy sources that share the places with them and they seem to like the family pet. I would suggest just picking a room and having the time of your life! What an adventurous place!
7. 1837 Bed & Breakfast, Charleston, SC
1837 is home to George the Friendly Little Boy. He has been seen running up and down the halls. It is also reported that he likes rooms: 2-2 and 3-1 where he shakes the bed and awakens the guests and repeatedly opens and shuts the bathroom doors. However, the owners make sure everyone knows that George is the friendliest little spirit you will ever see.
8. Annie's Inn Bed & Breakfast, Aiken, SC
In the late 1800s this home was used as a doctor's residence and the second floor was a hospital. With that bit of history (and that is just a bit of it as this home has quite a lot ) it is believed this is the reason there are ghosts. Only one has been heard. She is a little girl who roams the halls and calls for her mom. I don't think you will have anything to worry about, but you might hear her and what a memory that will make for years to come!
9. Barksdale House Inn, Charleston, SC
There are only a few stories told about this inn in regards to ghosts, so I can't tell you a whole lot. However, the more detailed story is of an older gentleman who will briefly appear and then walk through a closet door. Might be a good place to do a little investigation. I do know that it is an absolutely wonderful place to stay.
10. The Pelican Inn, Pawleys Island, SC
Well, now, you could say I saved the best for last. Didn't think I would forget this one did you? Pawleys Island and the Pelican Inn is pretty famous for The Gray Man who seems to not just walk the beach and warn of bad weather, but is also seen in the inn at times. There is also another spirit and some of the guests wait to see her as she walks up the stairs or does random things. She wears a gingham style dress with a white apron and goes about her day as if she is still alive. Some guests don't even identify her as a ghost at first,. She also seems to like the kitchen and sometimes oversees the making of dishes.
Remember, ghost hunting can be a fun and interesting activity, but please be respectful of others and their property. These owners graciously open their places for you, let's be gracious in return.
