Book This Dreamy Campsite Along Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Riverfront and You Won’t Be Disappointed
Looking to get off the grid and enjoy some fishing and hiking? This stunning campground on the Allegheny River is a great way to escape from it all.
I might be New Jersey born and bred, but Pennsylvania is quickly becoming my favorite vacation spot. I never run out of things to do in the Keystone State because it's one of the most geographically and culturally diverse states in the country! From the bustling cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to the delicious food and unique cultural experiences of Lancaster and Amish Country to the thrilling amusement parks like Hersheypark and Knoebels to the historical significance of Gettysburg, I could explore Pennsylvania for every vacation and never get bored.
Between those unique destinations, you'll find some of the most impressive nature in the northeast. That makes rural Pennsylvania an amazing place to come if you want to get off the grid, and an amazing spot for that is at this beautiful campground on the Allegheny River. River Hills Above the Allegheny is a rustic getaway located on 75 acres near the small towns of Parker and Armstrong, about an hour north of Pittsburgh. You're not far from the city, but you'll feel like you're in a whole other world.
Western Pennsylvania is a stunning place, and there are areas where you can feel like you're the only person around for miles. River Hills Above the Allegheny is one of those spots, providing a rural getaway not far from one of Pennsylvania's most beautiful rivers. While the campsite is pretty remote, it features four campsites, including one that features an electric outlet and vehicle charger.
The style here is platform camping, offering wooden elevated platforms that offer a little more privacy and protection when sleeping. Most people bring their own tents, but there is a spot available with a large canvas tent that will be ideal for those looking for a little more room for a bigger group. The campsites are nicely spread out for privacy.
There aren't many on-site amenities; this is a traditional campsite, not a resort, but that makes it ideal for those who want to rough it while still having the security of an organized campsite. Fire pits are the main way of cooking on the campsite, and firewood is available, so you can leave the axe at home!
The greatest joy of this campsite is simply being around the area's stunning natural landscape. There are small hiking trails on the grounds, as well as a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole. But you're also not that far from the banks of the Allegheny River, which is an amazing place to go fishing.
Of course, there's nothing better than exploring and taking in the area's natural beauty. Wildlife is plentiful in this area, and the sunset over the Allegheny is worth the trip in and of itself.
If this rustic campground on the Allegheny River sounds right up your alley, tell a travel buddy about this article and book your own spot on the official HipCamp listing. If you're traveling with kids and they've had enough of the great outdoors, make sure to take a day trip to Pittsburgh and visit Kennywood, one of the Northeast's oldest and most distinctive amusement parks.
