This Is The Most Unique Hotel In Oklahoma And You’ll Definitely Want To Visit
Do you wish you could get away from the hustle and bustle of your life, but you don't have time to vacation in an exotic location for two weeks? Sometimes, all you need is a little staycation. Head to Tulsa, and stay at this unique, historic hotel that will delight (and pamper) you.
Residents of Tulsa in 1925 only had to look up at the skyline to see the iconic sign of the city's most prestigious hotel. At night it could be seen for miles, lit in red.
The Mayo Hotel was completed in 1925, in the Art Deco Style. At 19 stories, it was the tallest building in Tulsa, and with its 600 luxurious rooms, the most lavish.
The Mayo was THE place to be - drawing celebrities and dignitaries. Guests included everyone from President Kennedy to Elvis. The Crystal Ballroom hosted dancing, pageants, dinners and more.
The Mayo was known for its opulence...and its excellent service. This photo shows some of the hotel's original bellhops.
The Mayo was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
The hotel closed in 1981, and sat vacant for the next 20 years. Time, vandalism and the elements ravaged this beautiful hotel and left it a shambles.
City officials were ready to tear the hotel down when the Snyder family purchased it in 2001. Renovations began with the lobby, and the entire hotel was renovated by 2009, at a cost of $42 million.
Every inch of this hotel has been restored to reflect its rich history, and it's just as opulent as it was when it originally opened in 1925.
You'll feel as though you stepped right back in time...except with more modern conveniences, of course.
The hotel has 106 guest rooms, and each has retro touches that connect with the hotel's Art Deco history.
Lounge like a rock star in the Celebrity Suite. I wonder what Elvis would think of this place now?
You'll find little historic gems, such as this original mailbox, which is still installed in the lobby, throughout the hotel.
Visit the Mayo Museum on the mezzanine to see more memorabilia and artifacts from the Mayo's previous glory days.
Today, guests come from all over the world to visit The Mayo - just like they once did decades before.
The Mayo Hotel is located at 115 W. 15th Street in Tulsa.
Do you have memories of The Mayo in its earlier days? Have you stayed here since the renovation?
