Dream Spring Break in Ohio: Where I’d Go if Money Was No Object

Escape to New Richmond, Ohio for spring break at a stunning spa-style rental with a hot tub, sauna, and river views: pure luxury if money were no object.

Spring Break. Just the words bring up memories of sun, escape, and maybe a few activities you don’t put on your résumé. Most people think warm beaches, crowded boardwalks, and the kind of drinks that come with tiny umbrellas. Florida? A classic. Arizona? Golden light and big skies. Hawaii? Sure - if you’ve got the budget of a minor royal. But what if you went somewhere that doesn’t need to shout to be heard? Somewhere with a little more soul than selfie spots. Somewhere like Ohio.

Yes, Ohio.

Now, hear me out.

This time of year, spring is waking up slow and beautiful here. East Fork State Park is greening up again, with trails that wind through the woods and lakes that still hold the morning mist. You might catch a bald eagle riding thermals above the Ohio River or find a stretch of trail so quiet you can hear the frogs warming up their spring chorus. It’s not loud, it’s not flashy - and that’s the charm.

Which brings me to New Richmond.

Just 30 minutes from Cincinnati, New Richmond is one of those small river towns that doesn’t feel the need to reinvent itself. It’s a town of old brick storefronts and a main street that invites wandering, not rushing. Right on the river, in this town, spring brings that rare kind of weather: mild, bright, and made for being outside without checking the forecast.

Of course, if you’re doing spring break right, you need a basecamp that goes beyond basic. That’s where the Nature Spa House comes in. This place is not messing around. Four bedrooms, space for 12, two bathrooms, and a vibe that says: yes, you can bring your friends... and maybe a chef.

There’s a hot tub and sauna for when your muscles say “no more hiking,” and a semi-indoor pool that lets you swim under cover while watching the sky shift above the trees. There’s a full-on gourmet kitchen, a stocked pond outside, and ten acres of woods to explore. Throw in a fire pit, a game room, and a home theater, and you’ve basically assembled the Avengers of relaxation.

The place is surrounded by nature - real nature. Deer wander through the property. Hawks circle above. You can even visit the chickens next door, courtesy of the friendly property manager who lives in the guest house nearby. Don’t worry, it’s all private and low-key… kind of like a helpful neighbor.

And when you want to venture into town, there’s food worth writing home about. Start at Front Street Café, equal parts cozy and cool. Whether you're in trail shoes or brunch gear, you’ll get a good cup of coffee, a serious sandwich, and the kind of fresh-baked treats that disappear quickly if you're not paying attention.

New Richmond is full of small surprises. Head to the New Richmond Alpaca Farm and meet some of the weirdest, softest creatures you’ll ever take a selfie with. Take a lazy drive and find strange and wonderful roadside attractions like the Cardboard Boat Museum. And if live music’s your thing, Riverbend Music Center isn’t far off.

Evenings back at the Spa House are their own kind of magic. You cook dinner with the windows open, play a cutthroat round of pool or cards, and then sink into the hot tub while the woods hum around you. No timelines, no reservations, no noise. Just people you like and a place that doesn’t need to try too hard.

If birds are your thing (or even if they’re not), spring in Ohio makes a strong case. Warblers dart through the trees, woodpeckers drum like they’ve got something to prove, and every now and then, an eagle cuts across the sky like it owns it. All you need is a good view and a bird guide in your pocket.

If money were no object, I wouldn’t be packed shoulder-to-shoulder on a crowded beach. I’d be here, in New Richmond, Ohio: towel nearby, drink in hand, and absolutely no schedule to keep. I'll also be using Only In Your State's new Travel Planner to discover nearby Ohio adventures!
