With Nearly 21,000 Acres To Explore, North Carolina’s Largest State Park Is Worthy Of A Multi-Day Adventure

We know the old adage "bigger isn't always better," but when it comes to state parks in North Carolina, large size certainly has its advantages. And it doesn't get any larger than South Mountains State Park. This magnificent park in Burke County spans just under 21,000 acres. This lush natural oasis has it all: mountains, lakes, waterfalls, hiking trails, campsites, and plenty more. It's truly incredible and definitely worth an adventure, which is best enjoyed over multiple days if you ask us!

South Mountains State Park is tucked away in a rugged area of the state, up in Burke County toward the west. The park is named for the South Mountains, a range that's part of the mighty Blue Ridge Mountains that we're so famous for.

You'll find many opportunities for recreation within the park, but with scenery this beautiful, hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy the area.

The park's most popular feature is High Shoals Fall, an 80-foot waterfall that is on the Jacob's Fork River.

You can reach the falls via a 2.4-mile loop trail of moderate difficulty.

There are a variety of other trails here, including many that are quite challenging.

The steep mountainous terrain results in difficult hikes.

The views are definitely worth the effort, though.

Buzzard's Roost, the highest point in the park, has an elevation of around 3,000 feet.

With so much room to explore, you'll definitely want to stay overnight to make the most of your trip!

You'll find 24 tent camping sites spread out over seven different locations. Note that pre-registration is required for back country camping, so make sure to get registered at the Visitor Center before spending the night.

In addition to the 40 miles of trails that can be explored on foot, mountain bike, or horseback, you'll find great places for fishing, plus exhibits at the Visitors Center detailing the history of the area.
