North Carolina is one of the best states for a nature-focused getaway. With coastal beaches on one side and mountains on the other, there's a landscape for every type of nature lover. While most secluded cabins in North Carolina will give you an incredible stay for your money, there's something to be said for staying in a hotel.

We've picked out a few of our favorite budget-friendly hotels in North Carolina that keep you well within a decent range of outdoor adventures while still staying in larger towns and cities across the state. All of these North Carolina hotels are $200 per night or less (most are around $150 a night), so you can spend your money on more activities, experiences, and restaurants.

Hilton Garden Inn, Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk

  • Price Point: $$
  • Top Amenities: Beach access, two pools, fishing pier, on-site restaurant

I know “nature-focused” tends to conjure images of enchanting forests and majestic mountains, but beaches deserve their fair share of attention, too! This beach hotel in Kitty Hawk puts you in a perfect location to explore North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The hotel has beach access, a fishing pier, two pools, plus each room has a balcony.

Spend your days relaxing on the beach or opt for a thrilling hang gliding lesson. Don’t forget the wild horses of OBX—take a wild horse tour to see these beauties in their element.

Hampton Inn, Morganton

  • Price Point: $$
  • Top Amenities: Hot breakfast, pool, fitness center

Morganton is a great place to use as a home base while you explore some of the nearby hiking trails. Pisgah National Forest, Lake James State Park, and South Mountains State Park are all within a 30-minute drive of this hotel. The Fonta Flora Trail at Lake James is an incredibly scenic trail worthy of your time.

Lake James offers 150 miles of shoreline to enjoy, and the state park has a lovely stretch of beach that’s perfect after a hike. South Mountains State Park is North Carolina’s largest state park, so be sure to carve out some time to do this beautiful state park justice. You could spend an entire week exploring the more than 20,000-acre park.

Courtyard by Marriott, Boone

  • Price Point: $$
  • Top Amenities: Fitness center, pool, on-site restaurant

Sitting pretty in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Courtyard by Marriott is an ideal location for a nature-driven getaway. Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park is nearby, and cyclists can enjoy 185 acres of challenging trails here.

For folks on foot, you can drive south to catch the Blue Ridge Parkway and stop off at any number of hiking trails along the way. There are three spectacular overlooks you should add to your itinerary: Thunder Hill, Yadkin Valley, and Raven Rock. All three overlooks are close to each other and about a 15-minute drive from the hotel.

Holiday Inn, Asheville

  • Price Point: $
  • Amenities: Pool, on-site restaurant, fitness center

Enjoy a wonderful nature-driven vacation at the Holiday Inn in Asheville. The boutique hotel has a mountain lodge vibe to it while being just minutes from downtown Asheville. The Biltmore Estate and Blue Ridge Parkway are also nearby, but I wouldn’t blame you if you just floated in the pool and watched the clouds cast shadows over the mountains all day.

Prices hover under $150/night, making this a fabulous budget-friendly hotel in Asheville as long as you’re ok with staying outside the downtown area. Be sure to swing by the Asheville Botanical Garden during your stay. Although Hurricane Helene heavily damaged this area, restoration efforts are ongoing, and your support matters now more than ever.

Aloft, Mooresville

  • Price Point: $
  • Amenities: Pool, fitness center, pool table/game room

Bold colors and a modern design are what set Aloft apart from the rest. The rainforest showerheads are also a nice touch. The hotel in Mooresville is located just minutes from Lake Norman, which offers endless aquatic adventures. North Carolina’s largest lake is an ideal fishing spot, but you may prefer renting a paddleboard and enjoying a sunset paddle.

For more of a party vibe, gather up your closest buddies and rent a party pontoon on Lake Norman. There are plenty of waterfront parks on Lake Norman, including Lake Norman State Park on the northern side of the lake.
