There's almost no end to the amazing camping experiences you can find in the Cornhusker State, but this one in Cass County is definitely one of the most unique campgrounds in Nebraska. You can spend the night camping in Nebraska in a tepee, similar to those traditional used by the Native peoples of the Great Plains. Platte River State Park is sometimes overlooked when it comes to southeastern Nebraska attractions - Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, which is just down the road, tends to steal the show. But this park has a unique charm all its own, and it definitely deserves a visit.
Platte River SP has all of the features you could hope for in a day trip or camping destination. The hiking trails are superb, the observation tower lets you climb to the top for an incredible view, and the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex provides the opportunity to hone your shooting and archery skills.
Paddle boats, wildlife watching, fishing, horseback rides, and this picturesque little waterfall are some of the many, many reasons visitors keep coming back every summer.
And for those visitors who don't want to try to fit everything into just one day, there are several lodging options. Modern cabins and camping cabins make up the bulk of the sleeping arrangements, but if you look at the far left-hand side of the map below, you'll see an interesting alternative: the Pawnee Tepee Village.
The four tepees are set on little wooden platforms to keep them out of the dirt. They're far enough removed from one another that you don't feel like you're in your neighbors' territory, but close enough that you can still venture out and chat if you're staying in the village with friends or relatives.
Many people bring their own tents and set them up inside the tepees since these fun little structures don't provide as much protection from bugs and the elements as most campers prefer. Adding this second layer of tent protection doesn't detract from the unique experience of sleeping in a tepee.
