Turn Back Time With a Stay at a Charming Retro Motel & a Meal at this Vintage Diner in Missouri

Step back in time with a stay at the retro Boots Court Motel and a meal at vintage Iggy’s Diner in small-town Carthage, Missouri!

Ready for a road trip where the journey and destination are equally memorable? Let Carthage, Missouri, transport you to simpler times with a nostalgic overnight stay at the historic Boots Court Motel and a hearty meal at the charmingly retro Iggy’s Diner. These two spots offer a one-two punch of vintage Americana, perfect for anyone craving a slice of the past or just looking for a unique stay in Missouri.

Start your adventure by checking into the Boots Court Motel, a Route 66 treasure that’s been lovingly restored to its 1940s glory in the “Streamline Moderne” style of architecture. Originally built in 1939, this motel is all about classic vibes. The original structure of the motel was a service station for the office, to which the rooms were added.

With white stucco walls, restored neon lights, and cozy rooms complete with retro radios playing vintage hits, it is no wonder the Society for Commercial Archaeology previously listed it as one of the 10 most endangered roadside attractions in the U.S. The motel, now on the National Register of Historic Places, is managed by a non-profit for preservation.

Pull your car under the signature carport, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a black-and-white movie. The front office is now a visitor center, making it the perfect base for exploring the Mother Road and all the things to do in Carthage, Missouri. While I love historic properties, I do appreciate that the 13 rooms just completed renovation in 2023. These accommodations are super affordable, too, at less than $150 a night. You can even visit the 66 Drive-In Theater in the warmer months.

Once you’ve settled in, roll the windows down and take a short drive over to Iggy’s Diner.

This 1950s-style diner is a feast for both your stomach and your eyes, with a stainless steel facade, shiny red booths, Elvis memorabilia, and a jukebox spinning classics.

The menu is a crowd-pleaser, with diner staples like juicy burgers and sandwiches (ahem, the drool-worthy Country Fried Steak Club), crispy fries, and thick milkshakes served in tall frosted glasses. Don’t skip the daily specials - they’re like a warm hug on a plate. And no surprise, breakfast is delicious at this classic diner; the pancakes and omelets are legendary.

From its historic square to the nearby Precious Moments Chapel, Carthage, Missouri, is brimming with small-town charm. But the real star is the nostalgia. Whether you’re a Route 66 enthusiast or just someone who loves a good retro escape, Boots Court and Iggy’s Diner promise a trip that’s as much about memories as it is about the moment. Pack your bags (preferably versatile and lightweight like this one), gas up the car, and let the past welcome you back. Check out some of our other must-do road trips in Missouri here.
