Have you ever wished for a more unconventional place to lay your head? Something more unusual than your typical hotel, but more comfortable than spreading out a sleeping bag? If you live in Minnesota, you're in luck. Our state has quite a few interesting places to get some Zs. One of the coolest - and most historic - is a working lighthouse hotel. Located in Two Harbors, the Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast is a quaint place to hit the hay.
Built in 1892, this lighthouse - known as the Two Harbors Light Station - is the oldest operating lighthouse left in Minnesota.
There are six buildings on the grounds, including the nearly 50-foot-tall tower, which rises 78 feet above Lake Superior. It still aids ships to this day.
The lighthouse became a bed and breakfast in 1999. It is operated by the Lake County Historical Society to help pay for the preservation of this landmark.
Inside, you'll find a cozy living room with homey furniture that feels like a step back in time.
The centerpiece of the living room is the original lens used to project light over great distances across Lake Superior back in the 1890s.
Each of the four bedrooms has stunning lake or forest views. The Keeper's Room draws crowds because the head lighthouse keeper once lived there.
Other accommodations will make you feel at home, too. All in all, you're in for a cozy stay.
In the morning, you can gather around the table in the original 1892 dining room.
There, you'll be served a delicious meal that will help you start your day right.
You'll need that jumpstart. There is plenty to explore in the area, like the breakwater walk, which juts far out into Lake Superior.
The Sonju Trail is another easy 1 mile walk that will take you from the lighthouse gate to Burlington Beach.
You can enjoy the gorgeous sights of Lake Superior all year at the Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast. But be sure to plan ahead - this place books fast.
