The History Behind This Remote Hotel In Massachusetts Is Both Eerie And Fascinating
The Wauwinet Hotel in Nantucket is a historic and reportedly haunted seaside destination with a rich history.
This remote island hotel in Massachusetts has a rich and fascinating history tinged with eerie happenings. From ghostly women to the sound of echoing laughter, there's more to this seaside vacation spot that meets the eye.
The Wauwinet first opened in 1875. It was named after the chief of the Native tribe that inhabited the eastern part of Nantucket.
The inn changed hands over the years, including a purchase by Asa Small in 1882 for $1,700.
The hotel was famed for its restaurant, which served fresh steaks, lobsters, clams and fish to the tune of a five-piece orchestra.
Families would sail from the mainland to enjoy the sea, sand and sun at the Wauwinet all during the 1900s.
However, spooky tales swirl around this beautiful nantucket hotel. It’s rumored that the original building was constructed on – what else? – a Native American burial ground.
Guests have reported spotting a ghostly woman flitting from room to room, accompanied by the strong scent of floral perfume.
The scent is always said to be that of roses or gardenias.
Even if you don’t believe the bit about an ancient burial ground, guests and staff alike have reported faucets that seem to turn on and off by themselves, as well as flickering lights and disembodied voices.
Haunted or not, this grand hotel on the sea is sure to be a magnet for those seeking an island getaway for years to come.
