You’ve Never Had A Vacation Like This Overnight Boat Excursion In Maine
Experience an unforgettable sailing adventure on the historic Schooner Stephen Taber in Rockland, Maine.
Vacationing in Maine means a lot of things. From beach getaways to spending time up at camp, some of the most relaxing trips take place right here in state. While we love the tried and true, every so often it's important to get outside the norm and try something new. This sailing excursion definitely fits the bill! For your next adventure, consider trading land for a few nights on the open water. Our first choice is this overnight boat trip in Maine.
This sailing adventure takes you overnight on the oldest sailing vessel in continuous service in America.
It's also a National Historic Landmark.
The Stephen Taber sets sail from Rockland Harbor from May to October, with three-, four- and six-day windjammer cruises.
The schooner is captained by Noah Barnes, who has been sailing on it since the age of six. It's been in the Barnes family for more than 30 years and every voyage is led by Captain Noah. That means all visitors get the authenticity of being guided by the person who knows the vessel best.
Passengers arrive and board the boat between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and prepare for Captain Noah's introduction to the trip.
After getting settled, passengers have the evening to themselves as they explore Rockland. The first night is spent at the dock to allow everyone to get comfortable.
From here, there's no set itinerary aside from three incredible meals a day.
The schooner has no engine, which means do diesel fumes.
It also means that each trip follows the wind and the sea, making each voyage unique.
Crew members are excited to teach passengers about sailing, from general terminology to how to hoist the sails.
It's through these activities that strangers become friends very quickly.
The Tabor sails into coves and areas that are best seen with the small boats available for individual exploration when the schooner is anchored.
While we love the views above deck, the galley holds something pretty special.
This is where you'll find the vintage wood-burning stove where cooked meals are prepared. As much as possible, local Maine ingredients are used.
Breakfasts include wild Maine blueberry pancakes, herb scrambled eggs along with locally cured bacon, some fresh fruit and the famous Taber granola.
For lunch you'll find soups, chowders, and fresh bread and salad.
After spending your day relaxing, be prepared for hors d'oeuvres before dinner.
No detail is overlooked at any meal, especially the hearty dinners served on board.
Each meal is special, but the best might be the traditional all-you-can-eat lobster bake which is cooked on an open fire on a secluded island when the weather allows.
This fun meal is also served with grilled steak and locally made sausage.
And you'll never have to worry about not getting enough.
Finish each day with a sunset view that can only happen on the open water.
By the time your trip concludes, the folks you met on the first night will have become friends.
And the memories will last forever.
