Book This Dreamy Campsite Along Kentucky’s Barren River and You Won’t Be Disappointed

Do you ever have the urge to unplug for the weekend and escape to a remote campground? I certainly do, especially around the spring/summer. Luckily for us, it’s the perfect time of year to get outside and spend our days enjoying Kentucky’s great outdoors. If you find yourself in need of a nature-driven escape, check out this dreamy waterfront campground in Kentucky. 

Gamaliel is a tiny town in Monroe County that’s home to fewer than 500 residents. It’s the perfect small town in Kentucky to pitch a tent and enjoy a waterfront weekend filled with endless aquatic adventures. It sits right on the Kentucky/Tennessee border, not far from the Old Mulkey Meetinghouse State Historic Site. It's about 50 miles west of Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park.

The Slab is a waterfront campground in Gamaliel, Kentucky, which is one of the most popular campgrounds in the state. It’s a bit of a hidden gem for nature lovers!

There are 75 campsites spread across the 500-acre campground, ensuring you’ll have all the space you need for a relaxing weekend. 40 of the sites are located right on the banks of the Salt Lick Creek and the Barren River. Imagine waking up to these views!

The family-friendly campground offers plenty of amenities that the whole family (even the dog!) will enjoy. From hiking trails to 75-foot-long water slides, there’s always an adventure around the corner. 

Should the weather take a turn, head over to the converted milk barn for some of the best ice cream you’ve ever tasted. There’s also a covered area with plenty of games to pass the time. 

Of course, the main reason to camp at a waterfront campground is to enjoy the water. Kayak rentals are available for folks to paddle down the river, and even a shuttle service is offered for a more organized kayak trip. Guests can also float down the Barren River on a two-mile float trip in a tube. There’s even a rope swing along the way to enjoy.

Fishing is another popular pastime. There are plenty of fishing holes where you can catch rock bass, Kentucky bass, channel catfish, and walleye. Don’t forget your Kentucky fishing license if you plan on dropping a line!

After a long day of splashing, floating, and hiking, head back to your campsite and get a fire going. Make s’mores, share campfire stories, and then turn your gaze to the sky and enjoy an evening of stargazing. That’s always my favorite part of camping, the campfires and the starry nights.
