You Can Sleep and Watch Bison at This Airbnb in Iowa

Watch bison roam from your patio at this farm stay in New Virginia, Iowa.

One thing that always surprises people when they meet me is just how much I love bison. As a city girl, I’ve always found sitting and watching wild bison to be a way to reconnect with the generations who came before us and pioneered through the prairie. Located about 40 minutes south of Des Moines, this farm stay at Tatanka Ranch in New Virginia, Iowa, allows guests to watch a herd of bison from their window.

The farm at Tatanka Ranch is a three-bedroom property that sleeps up to eight people. There are two regular bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other with a queen. For those traveling with kids, or who want to feel like a kid again, climb up a ladder to the loft to find a set of two bunk beds that are built directly into the wall. In addition to a great view of the valley, the farm stay provides two bathrooms, a washer and dryer, a full kitchen, and fast Wifi. It’s the perfect combination of getting out in nature while still having the creature comforts of home.

Of course, the real highlight is the bison. Whether you’re up early enjoying your morning cup of Joe, or roasting marshmallows over the fire pit, guests have the opportunity to catch sight of the herd of bison who call this pasture home. Keep in mind that the bison have a lot of room to wander, so you might only see them at certain times of day. According to previous guests, you’re very likely to catch sight of them in the morning. Most guests say they saw the bison every day of their stay. If you’re visiting in the springtime, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a bison calf nursing.

When the sun goes down, the view of the stars is to die for. While less than an hour from Des Moines, Iowa, you feel transported to the Old West with the glow of the moon and the low sound of bison rumbling in the distance.

If you're looking to get off property, the small community of New Virginia, Iowa, is centrally located. It's a short drive to Madison County Winery,  Lake Ahquabi State Park, and the historic Imes Covered Bridge. There are a handful of local eateries, like The Iron Horse Neighborhood Grill and Playa Margaritas Mexican Restaurants. Of course, Des Moines is also a relatively short drive away, should you wish to escape into something more urban.

Staying at the farm on Tatanka Ranch with bison is truly a one-of-a-kind adventure in Iowa.
