At over 3,000-acres Barnsley Resort in northern Georgia is a true gem that has garnered much attention over the past few centuries.
As the story goes, Godfrey Barnsley created this beautiful Southern haven, nicknamed The Woodlands, as a gift for his beloved wife Julia, over two centuries ago.
Construction began in the 1840s right in the foothills of North Georgia, with elaborate gardens and gothic revival architecture galore.
Sadly, just a handful of years after construction begins, Julia died of a lung ailment and the construction for the property stops.
Yet, just a year later, Barnsley returns to the land and while visiting has a dream of Julia who instructs him to keep building in order for their kids and future grandkids to enjoy.
The estate and surrounding gardens were completed over time and featured modern amenities that were rare during the 1800s, and furnishings that were shipped from all over the world.
Today, the estate features a combination of tree-lined roads and charming cottages for guests to stay.
After knowing the story and history behind the state, there is no wonder Barnsley Resort is one of the most romantic places in the entire country.
Come see for yourself the old architecture and masonry throughout the property, as well as some of the main buildings that have been renovated and restored over time.
