An Unforgettable Adventure Awaits On This Challenging Mountain Trail In Alabama

The 15.9-mile stretch of Pinhoti Trail from Chief Ladiga Trail to CR 500 beckons serious backpackers and hikers for a round-trip trek with tantalizing views. This challenging hike near Piedmont, Alabama begins at the Pinhoti Trail and Chief Ladiga trailhead in the northern reaches of Talladega National Forest.

This trail is a favorite during autumn and winter months when Alabama weather is cooler and the woods and water combine for spectacular seasonal scenes.

Set out in the early morning hours to capture the most serene surroundings of the quiet forest.

The trail features some steep uphills as you move southwest from the trailhead toward the northern base of Oakey Mountain, a 1,939-foot peak.

But never to worry. You'll get some downhill stretches, too. Keep following the occasional trail markers and blue blazes to keep you on course.

About two miles in on the Pinhoti from the Ladiga Trail, you'll find the Oakey Mountain shelter. The trail has another shelter about a half mile before you reach your turnaround point at County Road 500.

The entire journey offers beautiful views, whether surrounded by the forest punctuated with occasional rushing water features, wildlife along the path, or tiny details like woodland wildflowers, colorful mushrooms, and luscious moss.

A watershed lake greets you as you approach the CR 500 endpoint where you return for the trek back.
