This Incredible Lookout In Alabama Is So Worth The Hike It Takes To Get There

For the best hike near Cheaha Mountain, Alabama, try the McDill Point Via Pinhoti Trail route. This 16.8-mile, out-and-back trail is a favorite, particularly among experienced hikers who love backpacking and camping. If you prefer treks that are less challenging and yet still highly rated treks, check out the variety on our curated list of best hikes in Alabama. Located near Lineville, the Adams Gap Trailhead marks both the starting and ending point of this rugged trail in the Cheaha Wilderness.

This trail takes almost eight hours on average to complete, so plan ahead to camp and bring plenty of water, especially in warm weather months. Initially, the ascent is gradual, so enjoy the leafy landscape and mossy rock formations as you move northeast.

As the trail becomes more rocky, you eventually reach an especially challenging stretch known as "Stairway to Heaven."

Your prize is the view and a perfect place to pause after that effort. It's the first of two especially beautiful vistas that are most popular on this trail.

About halfway to McDill Point, you'll hit the intersection of the Pinhoti and Chinnabee Silent Trail. Those following the Pin-Chin-Sky Loop counterclockwise will take the Chinnabee, but you'll stick with the Pinhoti.

Approximately half a mile before arriving at McDill Point are remnants of a small plane crash from 1972 – a somber yet intriguing sight along the trail.

Finally, you'll reach McDill Point for another stunning overlook of this incredible section of our state.
