This Historic Park Is One Of Washington’s Best Kept Secrets

Fort Nisqually, a historic European settlement in Washington, offers visitors a glimpse into the past with original buildings and artifacts inside Point Defiance Park.

If you enjoy learning about Pacific Northwest history like me, you've probably heard of such landmarks as Fort Worden and Fort Vancouver. But there are plenty of other options for a visit to a historic park in Washington, including a Living History Museum operated by Metro Parks Tacoma.

One of the most historic places in Washington, Fort Nisqually was the first European settlement on the Puget Sound.

It was established in 1833 by The Hudson's Bay Company, a fur trading company.

The original fort was located in what is now DuPont, on the beach and plains above the Nisqually River.

Today, Fort Nisqually is located inside Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. You'll find several of the original buildings at this historic park in Washington, plus plenty of artifacts.

There are quite a few exhibits at the fort, including both permanent and temporary displays.

Metro Parks Tacoma also hosts events here on occasion, such as candlelight tours through this Washington historic park.

You can visit the fort daily in the summer, but from October - April, it's open Wednesday through Sunday from 11-4.

Admission prices for this historic place in Washington varies.
