15 Undeniable Things Every True Vermonter Has Done At Least Once

People are people wherever you go — or so the saying goes. And sure, we may do things in Vermont that people do everywhere, but we also have done things because we’re tough, adventurous and sometimes just plain old busy. So if you’re from Vermont, chances are you’ve….

1. Waited until after the first snowstorm to put snow tires on.

That first skid across the road will have you at the garage in no time.

2. Taken an apple off of someone else’s tree.

It’s easy pickings and we try to keep the doctor away. Besides, the owner would say yes anyway.

3. Called in sick to work or school to go skiing or hunting.

Even your boss has done it so don’t be afraid to admit it.

4. Walked to the mailbox in your slippers in the snow.

Maybe you’ve trekked out to get the mail or some firewood, but it’s a lengthy process to get socks and winter boots on when you’re only stepping out for a moment.

5. Driven the car before the windows defrosted.

Sometimes it seems like an eternity to wait for the windshield to defrost, so you boldly look out of the tiny circle and think, "Yup. This is good enough."

6. Convinced yourself or your family that pancakes are a legitimate dinner.

It’s freezing cold and you really don’t want to go to the store, so you whip up some pancakes and call it a "country breakfast for dinner."

7. Sweetened your hot beverage with maple syrup or honey when you run out of sugar.

Sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

8. Didn’t read the instructions for washing a wool sweater.

Missing the No Hot Water or Dryer symbols means you were left with a sweater that could fit a child, or a small dog.

9. Have been double-dog dared to lick a cold metal object in January.

And you did.

10. Your Christmas wreath and tree froze in a snow bank.

You missed the pickup date and discarded evergreens stayed where they were until the spring thaw. Why not start a new tradition of the "annual lighting of the Christmas tree" in the form of setting it on fire in your yard the following April?

11. You’ve covered up dog poop with snow.

You knowingly procrastinated because dealing with it in the spring sounded like a much better option.

12. Forgot to take off your studded tires.

You didn’t realize that the ticking noise coming from your car in June was the studded tires you forgot to take off.

13. You’ve gone cow tipping.

OK, not everyone has done this, but we’ve wondered about it.

14. Drink and hunt.

A bad, bad, bad combination!

15. You’ve gone on a road or trail that was posted as “Closed.”

This could be posted land, closed ski trails, the Notch Road in winter or through a construction detour.
