14 Things People ALWAYS Ask When They Know You’re From Vermont

When Vermont stereotypes meet our physical location in the United States, we become a bit of a mystery.  There are certain questions that people ask Vermonters, and while not everyone has been asked every question, here are 14 things that people have asked us when they know we're from Vermont.

1. Do you speak French?

Because of our close proximity to French-speaking Canada, people sometimes assume that we can all speak French. Montpelier does, however, sound beautiful when you pronounce it with a French accent.

2. Why do you like Maple Syrup so much?

Answer: Because it’s way better than that brown sludge you eat.

3. Do you Feel The Bern?

Just because we live in Vermont doesn’t mean we will necessarily vote for Bernie Sanders.

4. Do you hunt?

Some people do, some people don’t. Just like everywhere else in the world.

5. How often do you smoke pot?

Contrary to popular belief, not all Vermonters are long hair, tie dye wearing, pot smoking hippies.

6. Do people go ice fishing?

Yes. Sometimes we even catch a fish!

7. Are you a good skier?

Many youngsters grow up on skis, but not everyone. We’re all good at sledding, though.

8. Is winter really 9 months long?

Not really, but sometimes it sure feels like it!

9. Do you know So-and-So?

"I forget his last name, but he has brown hair and wears a plaid shirt…." The question is usually just a first name and general description. Example: Do you know Sue? Likes to read and drives a Subaru? Or Do you know Bobby? He went to UMM and has long hair. The funny thing is that occasionally we do know who they are talking about.

10. Did you grow up on a farm?

Not all of us have, but certainly some people grew up on a farm.

11. Do you drive a Subaru?

When the Outback became popular many years back it seemed that every other car in Vermont was a Subaru. But we also are partial to jeeps and pick up trucks.

12. Can you drive a tractor?

What, like it’s hard?

13. Can you milk a cow?

If you don’t already know how, you can probably learn pretty easily if you want at working farms, agricultural fairs and farm tours.

14. Is Vermont in Canada?

What are they teaching kids in school these days?
