Utah is known for more than beautiful national parks and excellent skiing. The Beehive State also has some pretty iconic foods that individuals in other states may shake their heads at. However, for us Utahns, we can’t seem to get enough of them. These weird, iconic, and signature food items are frequently seen on our kitchen tables or are served in local restaurants. Here are just seven of these weird and iconic Utah foods that every true Utahn knows and has tried.
1. Fry Sauce
If you ask for fry sauce outside of Utah, you may get some weird looks. However, we know the delight this tasty sauce brings and we put it on everything from fries to sandwiches. The real question is … do you put pickle juice in your fry sauce at home?
2. Jello
There is just something about Jello sitting on your table. Individuals of all ages love this jiggly good stuff and we aren’t afraid to experiment with it. Green Jello used to be a Utah favorite food and you may even see this item served with shredded carrots inside. Do you eat your Jello covered in whipped cream or plain? You can’t go wrong either way.
3. Scones
We can make an entire meal centered around this delicious food item in Utah as there are so many ways to eat your scone. For example, if you are craving something savory, pour on some chili or spread refried beans on top. If you want a sweet treat, melt honey butter on top, spread some raspberry jam, or maybe include a combination of both.
4. Funeral Potatoes
Only a true Utahn knows what funeral potatoes actually are and have tasted of their goodness. This is essentially a casserole filled with hash browns, sour cream, soup, and lots and lots of cheese. You can spice funeral potatoes up with some peppers or maybe even add chopped ham. This is definitely a dish that isn’t just served at funerals. In fact, it might be a Sunday dinner staple.
5. Pastrami Burgers
Sometimes, a regular hamburger just isn’t enough. When you top your beef patty with some pastrami, you will definitely have a treat. You’ll find this tasty burger at many local Utah restaurants, and you may even make your own at a summer barbecue. If you love a good pastrami burger, Crown Burgers in Utah claim to have the best.
6. Raspberry Shakes
There is nothing that screams Utah like a trip to Bear Lake for one of their mouth-watering raspberry shakes. If you don’t love the shakes, purchase some Bear Lake raspberries to munch on or to make tasty jam.
7. Utah Honey
You may not know it, but Utah is a top honey producer in the country. Many Utahns likely have honey in their cupboards and in their food storage. Of course, we need lots of honey for the honey butter on our scones and the peanut butter and honey sandwiches we eat for lunch.
