These 10 Photos Of Texas In The 1950s Are Mesmerizing

Showcases 12 vintage photos of Texas from the 1950s, highlighting how the state has changed over time.

They say pictures are worth a thousand words for a reason. Even though we weren't around to get the full context behind the photo, we can sit and speculate for hours, daydreaming about various scenarios to explain what was going on. There was a time when Texas looked quite different than it does today - and it's a treat to the eyes, in my opinion. Here are 12 vintage photos of Texas from the 1950s.

1. Aerial view (Houston, 1951)

The city doesn't look all that different to me. Do you see anything that's changed?

2. Pecos River High Bridge (High Bridge, 1951)

This is part of the Southern Pacific Railroad. It's so surreal seeing a photo of something I read about in history class.

3. University of Houston Marching Band (Houston, 1951)

Any of my readers UH alums? Go Coogs!

4. Air Force Fighter Squadron Aircraft (Ellington Field, 1955)

Protecting our country has always been a top priority in Texas.

5. Big Tex (Dallas 1956)

I think our state mascot has gotten a lot more handsome over the years, don't you?

6. Downtown El Paso (1956)

Take a look at all the classic cars lining the street. Pretty neat if you ask me.

7. Dallas Trade Mart (1958)

This market full of everything from decorations to garden furnishings is still standing today, but I guarantee you it looks much different than it does in this photo.

8. KB-29P Tanker (Bergstrom Air Force Base 1957)

There's just something majestic about old Air Force planes.

9. Executives (1959)

From left to right, former President Harry S. Truman, former President LBJ, and Mexican President Adolfo Mateos enjoy dinner and drinks together.

10. New Car (1959)

This was the very first car of its kind in 1959. You can see how thrilled the family was to call it their own.

If you were alive in the 1950s in Texas, how were things different than they are today? If you weren't yet born, do your parents or grandparents talk about how their life has changed since those times? What do they say? Share with us in the comments!
