10. Marshall County

With a per capita income of $25,502 and an average household income of over $40,000 a year, Marshall County ranks 10th richest in the state. The county seat of Marshall County is Britton.

9. Perkins County

Coming in close at 9th with a per capita income of $25,780 is Perkins County. The county seat is Bison and it has been around since 1908.

8. Haakon County

8th on the list is Haakon County. Its per capita income comes in at $25,877, with an average yearly household income of over $46,000.

7. Pennington County

Pennington County, where Rapid City is located, ranks 7th on the list. The per capita income is $25,894, just barely past Haakon County, and the average household income is just a few hundred more.

6. Minnehaha County

Next on the list at 6th is Minnehaha County, where Sioux Falls is located. The per capita income is $26,392 and the average household income tops over $50,000 a year.

5. Sully County

Halfway through the ranking now, 5th goes to Sully County, with the county seat of Onida. The per capita income is $26,596.

4. Stanley County

Stanley County comes in at 4th on the list with a per capita income of $27,435. Fort Pierre is the county seat and it has been around since 1873 - one of the oldest counties in the state.

3. Hughes County

Going into the top three richest counties now with Hughes County as third. Pierre, the capital, is located here. The per capita income is $28,236 and the average yearly household income is over $53,000.

2. Lincoln County

The title of second richest county in South Dakota goes to Lincoln County. Its per capita income is at $33,261 and they have the highest average household income at $67,365 per year.

1. Union County

The richest county in South Dakota is Union County, but both first and second places are pretty close. The per capita income of Union County is $33,783, just $500 over Lincoln County.
