7 Hills Every Rhode Islander Is Willing To Die On
These beloved Rhode Island quirks prove some traditions are worth fighting for.
We’re all pretty unique here in Rhode Island. Of that, we can all probably agree, right? However, as individuals, we all share some common viewpoints. Like, for example, Rhode Island is one of the most beautiful places in the United States. Everyone has those hills they’re willing to die on – and Rhode Island has its own quirky traditions that fit the bill.
From food, drinks, local lingo, and lifestyle habits, here are seven hills Rhode Islanders are willing to die on.
1. Rhode Island Seafood: The Freshest and Best in the World
Sure, outsiders can try to dispute the fact (though we think it is pretty darn indisputable) that Rhode Island has the world’s best seafood. All they – and we – have to do is visit one of the many seafood restaurants in Rhode Island, take a bite, and it's simply divine. Rhode Island has a long history of fishing, clam cakes, and quahogs. When visiting, be sure to check out Narragansett Bay, a renowned hub for seafood. Most waterfront restaurants have parking and patios.
2. Why Rhode Island’s Iconic Hot Wiener Will Always Beat a Hot Dog
Hot dogs have their place, but hot wieners? Well, Rhode Island invented ‘em, so they have a special place in our hearts. Plus, they’re just that good. Among the toppings you can request are celery salt, onions, mustard, and meat sauce. The tradition of late-night diners also holds cultural significance in Rhode Island.
3. Frozen Lemonade: The Only Real Lemonade for Rhode Islanders
Del's has a long history, dating back to 1948 when it was founded in Cranston. A glass of lemonade is indeed delicious. But, a cup of frozen lemonade – and Del’s Frozen Lemonade, in particular – that’s oh-so-heavenly. As a visitor, you'll notice trucks pop up at the beach and festivals across the state with Del’s Frozen Lemonade.
4. Coffee Milk: Rhode Island’s Official Drink That Locals Can’t Live Without
Coffee milk is the official drink of Rhode Island, and for good reason. It’s downright delicious. Why put milk in your coffee when you can add coffee syrup to your glass of milk? Mmm..mmm. The most iconic brand is Autocrat, and coffee milk is typically served at dinners and schools across Rhode Island.
5. It’s Not a Water Fountain, It’s a Bubbler in Rhode Island
Some people may refer to it as a drinking fountain, while others call it a water fountain. Us? Well, it’s a bubbler, and a long, cold drink from one just hits the spot – this local lingo is a proud Rhode Island identifier. But, newcomers often find it quirky! You can find bubblers in parks, public buildings, and schools all over the state.
6. Snow on the Ground? Rhode Islanders Still Rock Shorts
Everyone has their own style, but we can agree on one thing. Whether the temperatures are scorching or we’re shivering in the snow, we’ll slip on a pair of shorts. From college students to older generations, shorts are a popular choice for all-weather wear in Rhode Island. You’ll see shorts at beaches in July and even during January blizzards.
