7 Foolproof Ways To Spot An Imposter In Rhode Island

Identifying fake Rhode Islanders through unique local traits and habits.

We get it, it's pretty darn cool to be from Rhode Island, we've got beautiful beaches, great food, interesting history, and awesome people, but that doesn't mean you can say you're from Rhode Island if you're not! The street cred may be valuable, but we are very protective of our state and don't take kindly to imposters. Luckily, there are some things that make it easy as pie to spot a fake Rhode Islander from a mile away, and here are the top seven signs.

1. They don't like Del's Lemonade

If you don't love the taste of frosty Del's frozen lemonade, there's no way you're from Rhode Island!

2. They don't mind driving more than half an hour to get somewhere.

Anything more than half an hour counts as a road trip to us!

3. They've never heard of the Big Blue Bug

Nibbles Woodaway (more commonly called the Big Blue Bug,) is a Rhode Island celebrity!

4. They call this a water fountain

Every Rhode Islander knows it's a bubbler!

5. They put ketchup on their hot weiners

Everyone in Rhode Islands knows this is practically a criminal offense!

6. They don't remember Benny's

This store was such a Rhode Island staple that any local will have some fond memories here.

7. They give directions based on actual locations

Everyone knows that Rhode Islanders like to give directions that include places that are no longer there! If they don't say "take a left where the Newport Creamery used to be," they're not from here!

This isn't to say we don't want you in our beautiful little Rhodey, just that we don't want you claiming to be from here if you aren't. So please, come and visit, try a Del's, learn our local dialect, and get cozy, we love visitors, just not imposters!
