10 Things That Will Always Make Pittsburghers Think Of Home

Dorothy certainly had it right when she uttered those five sweet words, "There's no place like home." Most Pittsburghers would likely agree, right? No matter where we Pittsburghers go, we take a little bit of our hometown with us. But, some things remind us of the Burgh more than others. Here are 10 things that will always make Pittsburghers think of home.

1. Black and gold

Pittsburghers just seem to find each other when we're not in town. The easiest way to identify another native Pittsburgher - and one of the things that will always remind us of home - are black and gold. Black and gold, whether with a sports logo or not, just signifies Pittsburgh.

2. That familiar accent

Most of us likely don't think we have an accent. But, we can always sniff out another Pittsburgher just from the unique accent and the use of Pittsburghese. Would you agree?

3. Pierogis

Pittsburgh's known for plenty of scrumptious foods but one of our favorites has to be the pierogi. We celebrate it at an annual pierogi festival and watch a bunch of pierogies race between innings of Buccos games.

4. Heinz

Heinz is just a Burgh thing. Whether it's ketchup or mustard or pickles, any time we see the Heinz name, we automatically think of home.

5. Smiley cookies

Sure, we can find delicious cookies in all corners of the country. But, every one of them will be compared to the one and only: Eat 'N Park's smiley cookie.

6. Mister Rogers

Every city lays claim to famous people. But, only Pittsburghers can say they live in the same city as Mister Rogers once did. It's probably safe to say that any time we hear the name Mister Rogers, Mr. McFeeley, or Daniel Tiger, we automatically think of home and our childhood here.

7. Potholes

Yinzers have become experts at dodging potholes. After all, we live in a city with so many potholes that the mayor has pothole blitzes to fill them. No matter where in the world you're driving when you hit a pothole, what is one of the first things you think of? Home sweet home.

8. Roller coasters

Of course, other amusement parks boast some pretty amazing roller coasters. But, we'll always compare those coasters to the three that define Pittsburgh: The Racer, the Thunderbolt, and the Jack Rabbit.

9. Stadiums

You can take the Pittsburgher out of Pittsburgh but you can't take Pittsburgh out of the Pittsburgher - especially when it comes to sports. We'll cheer our hearts out in other stadiums - especially if we're rooting for our team - but we'll also compare those stadiums to our long gone Three Rivers Stadium or today's Heinz Field and PNC Park.

10. Bridges

Pittsburgh boasts the most bridges of any city in the world with 446. Traveling over a bridge - whether in the U.S. or abroad - will ultimately lead to thoughts of home.
