The Land of Enchantment is home to the nation’s richest history. Not only is the San Miguel Chapel our country’s oldest church, Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the continent. Here in the beautiful old city of Santa Fe are many of the country’s oldest landmarks, and this little house on De Vargas street is the oldest home to date. This old adobe house holds the most interesting history in the state, and arguably the whole nation, and you can still walk through to see a glimpse of the past.
Though many of the origins of this old adobe seem to be lost to history, it’s said it’s the oldest building in America, originating in 1646. The Oldest House still stands today for you to visit.
The eastern part of the building is home to a gift shop where you enter the home, which leads to the western side that remains as the ancient adobe it’s always been.
In 1200 AD, Spanish settlers were the main occupants of the house. The house is located in the historic barrio called Barrio de Analco, and it’s within this barrio that the house has seen decades of history pass through.
Tlaxcala Indians were the main settlers in this barrio until the Great Pueblo Rebellion, where the Indians were forced to retreat, and a new era started, bringing new people to the house.
The Oldest House has gone through many different occupants from the 1700s to today. The building has housed soldiers' families, various Plains Indian tribes, and was even the house of a Spanish Territorial Governor momentarily. Until the 1920s, this old adobe was occupied by dozens of various cultures of Santa Fe.
Now, you can visit The Oldest House and see the thick adobe walls, low hanging ceilings, and dirt floors first hand.
As you walk through, you’ll find many old photographs and handwritten articles to read and learn about life long ago. There are two small rooms that the settlers used to inhabit, and being inside them makes you imagine what it would be like to have lived there.
This 800-year-old house is home to some of New Mexico’s richest history, and is incredible to experience firsthand. You’ve never experienced Santa Fe’s roots until you’ve been to The Oldest House.
The Oldest House is located at 215 E. De Vargas St., Santa Fe, NM. Admission is free, and the gift shop through which you enter through is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, though you’re welcome to look in from the outside at any time.
