We Bet You Didn’t Know There Was A Miniature Liberty Bell In New Jersey
Perth Amboy in New Jersey features a miniature Liberty Bell and the oldest City Hall in continuous use in the United States.
New Jersey was one of the most important states in the early days of this country's birth - so why does it seem like all the coolest symbols of America are located in its neighbors? The Statue of Liberty is in New York - at least, that's the easiest way to get there - and the Liberty Bell is in Pennsylvania. At least, the one you know is. There's a miniature Liberty Bell in Perth Amboy that's worth a visit - especially since it's located alongside some of the state's most interesting historic buildings, including the oldest City Hall in the United States. Perth Amboy is a fascinating town, and while some of the historical sites here can only be accessed via tours, this replica of one of the country's greatest treasures can be seen by just walking up.
Perth Amboy is one of New Jersey's oldest towns, and that can be seen in its many historic buildings.
That's nowhere clearer than when it comes to the town's City Hall, first built in 1714 and used as a courthouse.
The oldest public building in continuous use in the entire United States, it features multiple monuments - including this one dedicated to the Earl of Perth - the city's namesake.
The most eye-catching monument in the area, though, is definitely the Liberty Bell replica just outside the building.
These bells were commissioned in 1950 by the US Treasury Department and given to each state and territory.
It's not the only historic spot in the city - make sure to drop by the Proprietary House, the only home of a colonial proprietary governor still standing.
