9 More Unbelievable Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Nebraska

Nebraska is one of those states that most people don't know much about...unless you happen to be from here. We've talked about Nebraska facts before (here and here), but there's always more to learn about the good ol' Cornhusker State.

1. There are 3.29 cows for every human in Nebraska.

(We're using "cow" in the colloquial sense to include bulls as well.)

2. Speaking of cattle, more bull testicles are served at the annual Testicle Festival than anywhere else in the world.

Round the Bend Steakhouse in South Bend brings our state this honor.

3. We have an estimated one museum for every 800 residents.

A Nebraska Life Magazine reporter made this assertion. With a population of 1.88 million...that's a whole lot of museums.

4. O Street in Lincoln is the longest continuous main street in the country.

According to who you ask, the busy street stretches out anywhere from 20 to 60 miles.

5. Daniel Freeman, the first person in the country to file a homestead claim under the Homestead Act of 1862, staked his claim right here.

He settled in Beatrice.

6. A clone of the famous apple tree that inspired Sir Isaac Newton's theory of gravity lives at UNL.

7. Our gross domestic product (GDP) is closest to that of Ecuador.

In other words, Nebraska produces roughly the same value of goods and services as a whole country.

8. Our state has about as much firepower as the entire Czech Republic.

That's in terms of privately-owned guns.

9. Nebraska's population is comparable to that of Kosovo.
