10 Ways Maryland Is America’s Black Sheep… And We Love It That Way

Most of us have heard the term black sheep, which is used to describe a person who is a bit of an outcast or doesn't necessarily fit in with others. Marylanders are definitely unique and do things that you won't find out-of-staters doing. If you are living in Maryland, you know there are some things only people from Maryland will understand. Take a look at this list that proves Maryland is America's black sheep... and we love it that way.

1. Only in Maryland will you carry this around in your purse... just in case.

It's always good to be prepared.

2. And it seems a bit odd that we're so passionate when arguing about Sheetz versus Wawa.

If you came across this road sign, which would you choose?

3. Or broiled crab cakes versus fried.

Can't we just agree that they're both delicious?

4. We most definitely don't drive gently.

Out-of-staters become downright horrified when witnessing aggressive Maryland drivers. What can I say? We've got places to be.

5. Our regions are as diverse as can be.

Mountains, beaches, waterfalls, farmland, wetlands, and more. We're called America in miniature for this reason and no other state's topography compares.

6. And because the regions are vastly different, so are our accents.

Travel from Western Maryland, to Baltimore, to the Eastern Shore, and you'll notice just how different the accents are from one another.

7. We eat crabs and then decorate our Christmas tree with their corpses.

If this isn't peculiar, I don't know what is.

8. We shout "O!" during the National Anthem.

It's best not to try this anywhere else.

9. Other states think we're a little too obsessed with the Maryland flag.

Okay, maybe they're right. There's nothing wrong with a bit (or a bunch) of state pride.

10. Seriously. The flag is literally everywhere.
