10 Ways Maine Is America’s Black Sheep… And We Love It That Way

Mainers have unique traits and traditions that set them apart from people in other states.

Maine is special and we like to think that makes us Mainers even MORE special. From the way we speak to the foods we eat, it's easy to feel a little different from the people of other states. We might be the black sheep of the country, but who ever said that being normal was good? Certainly not us! So, read on to find out just a few of the ways we're strange. Wait. I mean great!

1. While the rest of the country tries to invent new ways to eat kale, we consider this the best lunch around.

Give us an Italian, some Humpty Dumpty chips and an Oakhurst beverage and we're set.

2. We are all about self-expression.

And a lot of times that comes out in our license plates. Thank you for being a friend, Bea Arthur!

3. We don't rely on a GPS to get around.

Because you get this as soon as you come out of the womb. If you can't find your way using the Gazetteer, you probably don't need to go there anyway.

4. We don't say or dial any area code when it comes to phone numbers in Maine.

There's only one! And it is a thing of beauty.

5. We're not fans of that state to the south...

6. But, we'll endure traffic to go root for all of their sports teams.

It's not easy having to rely on others for sports teams.

7. People like the "North Pond Hermit" found Maine to be juuuust perfect.

After living a completely solitary life for 27 years, Christopher Knight was arrested in 2013 after a life of larceny in the woods. He claims to have only spoken to one person in this time and, more remarkably, not paid for anything since the 1980s. NOTE: This image is not of the actual hermit. He was a hermit and didn't like having his photo taken we imagine.

8. This is what our airports look like during the holiday rush.

We're pretty sure other states are jealous. Small populations might mean longer drives to visit friends, but it's sure helpful when you're in a hurry!

9. This is not a big deal for Mainers.

This is actually just a Tuesday with some snow. And this person is on their way to work.

10. And, while our winters can be rough...

...we pretty much love them.

Another thing we love about Maine? The fact that you can get to so many places on just one tank of gas.
